  1. I am a new Mac user and have recently bought an E-Mac with a superdrive. I would like to know the easiest way I can backup my DVD collection. Does anyone have a clear step-by-step process I can follow to do this. I am a complete rookie so all the help I can get would be much appreciated. Thank you.

  3. The whole disk would be nice, but if I can't do that then just the movie would be fine. I have an 80GB HD with basically nothing on it.

Uses the program DVD2OneX, which is well worth the price tag.

    I'LL SAY!
TGPO IS THE MOST HIGH AUTHORITY HERE!
    5000+ POSTS!

why not use both of our tutorials

dvd2one is not the only app, there is dvdremaster but they are about the same price

remaster takes a heck of a lot longer, but wow they do look good!

M2VRequantizer is the fastest, and is equal in my opinion to dvd2one.
M2VDownsizer is the best looking but also the longest

    http://www.metakine.com/products/dvdremaster/

the price may be 10 dollars different if i remember

    is the link for remaster

Other programs you'll need for this are as follows:
DVDBackup (or OSEx can be substituted for it, but is harder to use)
    Roxio Toast
There is no step 3 . . . there's no step 3! OMFG, WHAT HAPPENED TO STEP 3?
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

It was in those original iMac commercials with Jeff Goldblum. The steps to getting started with your iMac are as follow:
    1: Plug it in
    2: Turn it on
3: There is no step 3. There's no step 3!!!
    (queue elevator music)

  16. Sorry Tgpo. I'm simply not worthy. Remember, I'm new to all of this, so please be patient. I will look at BOTH your tutorials. I really appreciate your help with this.

So basically I need DVD2oneX, DVDBackup and Roxio Toast?

I'm assuming I can find these on version tracker.com?

    Thank again.

Those 3 programs will work in most cases. You can download and buy DVD2OneX ($55) here. You can download DVDBackup (free) here. You can buy and download the latest version of Toast ($79 - 89) here, or you might be able to find better deals for it from online retailers, especially if you don't need the latest version (6.0.3 is the latest version, but 5.2.3 works great in MacOS X 10.3 Panther and is cheaper). Sometimes, DVDBackup won't work on a DVD, and you'll need OSEx (free), available here. Its interface is a little strange, but just click the 'Fmt' button and select 'DVD Image', and then the 'Options' button, and set the key refresh rate to 'VOBU'. You can then hit the 'Options' button again to make that window go away, and hit the 'Begin' button, choose a save destination, and away you go. Note that this will take about 3x as long as DVDBackup, but works with DVDs that DVDBackup fails on.

  18. What is the program Forty Two all about? Is there any way I can backup my DVD collection for free without having to pay for downloads?

Its not downloads your paying for, its the applications.
To back up commercial dvd's you HAVE TO make them smaller than they are.

Most commercial dvd's are on DVD9's ie they can hold way more than 4.4 gigs (which is the limit of our burning dvd's to a single "normal" disk

now since this dvd will be greater than 4.4 gigs you cant burn it to normal dvdr's

I say normal because there are dvdr's that have 2 sides each being 4.4 gigs. you can burn the movie to those without having to "shrink" it but you have a problem, how to split it!
and guess what.... splitting dvd app you have to pay for!

Now, if you happen to have a commercial dvd5 (one that is less than 4.4 gigs when you back it up) you dont have to use any of the pay programs

HOWEVER, you have to burn it! Toast is the best (pay) but you may be able to use OSX Disc Copy burner to burn the disk but there are limitations on that method.

so in a nutshell, you need
    1. dvd backup (free)
    2. dvd2one or dvdremaster (pay)
    3. toast (pay)

    make since?

  20. Thank's Galactica.

You're helping in a big way with all this info. I've taken a look at your tutorial (also Tgpo's) and will try to go for it. I really don't mind paying for the apps, it's gonna save me a bundle in the long term. As long as I can backup my commercial DVD "collection"....I will be a happy little mac user! YIPPEE!!
