My Dad plans to give me a DVD player soon. I know that a lot of DVD players play VCD. But I don't think a lot of them can play CD-R VCDs properly. What brand do you recommend? I have lots more VCDs than DVDs in my house. So I'll more likely use my DVD player as A VCD player.
Here's the only thing I can say:
SONY SUCKS!!!!!!
The best brand of CD-R I've seen so far if you wanna burn VCD content into a cd-r is Kodak DS Gold CD-R.

any pioneer brand kills anything. Pioneer is the premium brand for anything to do with DVD hardware and everyone knows it. get a pioneer DV-344 or DV-333. both are excellent!

he's not exageratting.. i've got a sanyo, and it does good vcd playback. but i've seen the same exact vcd on a pioneer dv-333 and it was head over shoulders better quality.

I agree with Yeshi and Jeex. I have a Pioneer 535 and it's fab. I only use the cheapest no-name blanks burnt at 8x and never ever had the slightest problem. CD-RWs play fine too, even after you "quick erase" them and re-burn.
Picture and sound quality is tops too, the 535 recently won the "Best Player under $1000" award from Sound And Vision Association, not bad for a $400 machine!

uh-huh. 535 0wwnz . i have a 535k and i have not 1 single bad thing to say about it, plays EVERYTHING.

I, too, have a Pioneer...the DV-C503 (5-disc version). So far, no problems playing my VCDs.

I have a sony DVP-S7700 DVD Player and it works fine with all VCD's, DVD's and XVCD's.
I put a 1.7mbit/s XVCD in the drive and it played perfectly.
I have a Pioneer DVR-S201 writer and all my DVD-R's work perfectly also.
A Truly Great machine - but there is probably better out there now.....

Pioneer all the way. I have a DV343 and it plays everything I throw at it. Unfortunately it does not play MP3's. stay away from the DV444 or 440 it claims to be able to play SVCD,VCD etc but I tried different samples on it an it was lousy. READ the reviews on the DV343 on this site under DVD Players, then type in pioneer dv343.

Since you explicitly state the most ideal player for playing CD-R VCDs then I'd have to say...Pioneer.
My first DVD player was an RCA 5220P, a very rock-solid player, but it could only play VCDs on CDRW media (even though the docs stated that it doesn't play VCDs at all!)
When I was looking for a replacement, I did numerous tests and experimentation, and decided that as far as playback quality (of VCD, SVCD, and DVD) the Pioneer DV-434 was the best consumer-grade DVD player under $200.
My VCDs play flawlessly. (CDR and CDRW media) Only the slightest artifacts are visible on my VCD discs mastered from poor VHS tapes. There are NO artifacts visible for VCD discs mastered from DVD rips. Like SupaCoopa I use el cheapo CDR media burned at 8x.
corwin1, check out a previous VCDHelp news item on KevinS' method for burning AudioVCDs. I've tried it and now my DV-434 (the progressive scan version of the 343) makes an awesome audio deck too! (Not at convenient as playing MP3 CDs, but 10 hours of music on one disc ain't too shabby.
