For $15 who cares? If it's crap, throw it away.

  3. Picked one up this past weekend. Works great - 16x. Can't beat it for the price.

I bought the Mad Dog 16X DVD ROM at OfficeMax for $15 after rebate. Great machine! Nice and quiet. I have tried several 16X units that really seemed to struggle (spin up, spin down, spin up, spin down). This Mad Dog unit has no problem reading any of my DVDs, DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs, and CDs. It may not be DVD+R compatible, as it is not specified on the box.

I should also mention that this unit seems to play audio CDs at full speed (48X ?). I have noticed that many DVD-ROM drives do this and I don't understand why.

For all you APEX 600A owners, I now have this drive in my player as a replacement for the original loader. What a screamer! This APEX / Mad Dog combination is the most responsive DVD player I have ever seen! It identifies the media and spins up fast. It jumps to tracks as fast as I can push the buttons!

Best $15 I ever spent! I won't be playing audio CDs with it though.

  8. Thanks for the reply. $15 after rebate. I looked at it again since Liteon got such good review. I think I may just pay more to get a slightly better DVD rom.
