  1. Went to PC Club to place an order for 2001. According to them, 2001 is being phased out and being replaced with 2002. Comparing the specs on the two players from Liteon.com, the only difference is that the 2002 model does not come with the pcmcia slot. Everything else seems to be the same. In turn, 2002 is $10 cheaper. And it also looks like the 0301beta is not available for 2002. I presume that's just a glitch on their UI. Does anyone know any other difference besides what I have mentioned?

  2. Have a look for your self at the differences.

Im not so sure about it being phased out, these DVD Players are new, I dont think they are going anywere for now. The LVD 2001, has more features then the LVD 2002... Once again go to that link.

  3. not much of info on the link. The specs on them are exactly the same word for word except the pcmcia slot. Based on the reviews I've read, the pcmcia is really slow to load. Maybe Liteon decided to remove that to save themselves from supporting it through firmware. Which is fine by me if they are going to concentrate on improving the core functionalities rather than "nice to have" stuff.

I had my mind set up to buy 2001 today, but the salesman at PC Club threw a curveball today with 2002.

Does anyone have more technical information like different chipsets used or things like that? If the only difference is the pcmcia slot, I'd go for cheaper one because I don't really care about the pcmcia slot.

  5. Have you tryed reading the desriptions on the link that i provided? Have a look below at the attached image because I dont know of any other clearer way to point it out for you.

  6. The LVD-2002 description is based on one submission, so I think it is safe to assume that it is incomplete. I believe that the confusion that teramesher and I are having is why LiteOn even put out this version. Do they just not want to support the PCMCIA slot? Have they changed the chipset? Did they get rid of the region-free hack (actually, the listing below says they haven't)? Was it just to change the faceplate? Considering the complete lack of 2002 reviews on the net, I am starting to wonder if anyone even owns one.

  7. ps2wiz,
you do realize that the comparison is based on 1 report of 2002, therefore making the comparions rather invalid. I didn't think I needed to mention the obvious, but I guess I do after all. Thanks for posting the link as well as the img anyway.

Like I pointed out, their specs are exactly the same with the exception of pcmcia slot. I am trying to find out if there's more to it than that.

  8. thanks pigsfly, that's exactly what I'm trying to find out. I presume that they are doing away with pcmcia slot because it's probably not their core focus and they rather make other things better on the player. But again, this is my speculation. Here is what I know.

The PC Club, which is the only retail store I know of that sells the Liteon player in my state. They've recently had an ad for 2001 for $139 with $30 rebate until the 11/16/2003. However, around 11/13, they took the item off their website. They do, however, have a sale on 2002 for $130 with #30 rebate good until 12/16. This does not show on their public website, but the saleman showed me the internal(intranet) site with the price. They did also mention that they are having hard time ordering 2001 because there are so few out there.

  9. I had noticed the disappearance of the 2001 from the PCClub website. It is also going out of stock at a number of other online firms, which seem to be replacing it with the 2002. It does feel like a switchover is taking place. Also, I can find the 2002 listed on the PCClub site for $130, but I can't find a link to the rebate. Is that an in-store thing only? Do you have a link? Thanks.

  10. I was wondering why it's not listed on the website either. It was on their intranet/internal webpage when I went to the store. So you might want to call the store and find out for sure.

  11. See:
    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=325186

It looks like the models are identical short of the PCMCIA support. Since the slot looks ugly, works slowly, and hasn't been used in a hack yet, I think I am going to go with the LVD-2002. Don't know much about DVD players, but will at least try to post some pics when it arrives.

There are other interesting posts on point at that board, but frankly, those people scare me. I am selling my old DVD players to get a new one. They are considering this as their fifth player.

  12. a lot of good info on the forum, pigsfly. Looks like there are other topics related to 2001/2002 on the forum as well. That should be good reading. thanks for the link again.

    cheers!

  13. more info on 2002...
I called the store today. The rebate on 2002 starts from 11/28 to 12/13. You can however order them online and have it delivered to the local PC Club retail store and pick it up on or after 11/28 to qualify for $30 rebate.

  14. Thanks. Since I am nowhere near a PCClub store, I ended up ordering this online from thenerds.net. Their shipping is a lot cheaper than PCClub, so it came out to almost the same, even with the rebate.

  15. Well, here is the email I got from Liteon:

    1) Does it support DTS?
->Bascially ,if the movies contain the DTS output then 2001 will output DTS.

    2) Is there any difference between Liteon LVD 2001 vs 2002 other than the pcmcia slot?
    ->progressive scan : 2001 supports 480P ,720P ,1080I. 2002 supports 480P

    3) Are SMI and SSA subtitles supported?
    ->NO,only *.SRT

    4) Any plan to support double byte characters for subtitles?
-> Subtitle only can be recognized in english.

#2 is the biggest concern for me as they've dropped 1080i for 2002. bad! And for #4, it's not clear to me whether they are planning to support doublebyte character in the future firmware or not.

  16. Hello !

It seems that the 2001 will be replaced with e 2002 in the near future. in another thread, we recently discussed the new firmware for the 2001 (301beta) there were some probs with this beta.

I asked Liteon about the 301beta Firmware Problem, if i should reflash to 229 and about if they plan to replace the 2001 with the 2002 (and if so, if they will stop further development of new firmware for the 2001).
    heres the answer:

    Dear Sir,

1.Stay with the 0301 ,wait for the formal version releae.

2.Indeed ,we plan to stop updating the new firmware for 2001 in the near future , but not decided
    yet.

    Best Regards!

    AW

SO it seems the 2001 will be canceld, no more firmware updates. if anone plans to buy, he should be fitted better with the 2002.

  19. I am not convinced that I want to buy 2002 as it does NOT support 1080i like 2001 does. That is very lame! I am not convinced that they will stop supporting 2001 either. The two players are nearly identical to each other with exception of pcmcia and support of 1080i.

I'm looking at getting the LVD2002. I notice people taking about not having the 1080i. What would I be missing by not having that? All I've got is a 27 Inch TV. No HDTV or anything like that. Would I miss not having the 1080i? I'm looking to just watch every format under the sun. Is there any other player you can reccomend in the same price range? If the 1080i isn't a big deal for person like me I'll proably go ahead and get this one.

Currently I'm using my Playstation 2 as my DVD Player.
