    A similar but different question.

I capture to DV (via Canopus) TV to computer. I use Tmpgenc to convert my video to MPEG2 for DVD authoring. Mostly what I capture is 4:3 formatted but occassionally will capture 16:9 formatted movies. If I use standard 4:3 Tmpgenc settings my version of my DVD is slightly off and not proportional (IE I get a "fat" letterbox). If I set Aspect ratio to 16:9 and source aspect ratio to 16:9 (see this might be my mistake) and video arrange method to Center (keeping aspect ratio) I end up with a very "skinny" letterbox version of my authored DVD. Am I suppose to set my aspect ratio to 16:9, leave my source aspect ratio to 4:3 and still set my video arrange method to Center(keeping aspect ratio)?

    Quick summary:
Capture using Canopus ADVC-100 and DV Raptor (all NTSC) via SVIDEO out from TV. Convert DV video to DVD Video with Tmpgenc. Author DVD with InfoEdit and burn DVD with Nero.

If you're capturing from a 4:3 TV then your source is still 4:3 (some parts of the TV output are movie, some are the black lines. To get 16:9 you will need to crop it in TMPGEnc. When using 16:9 on 4:3 you will get the distortions you meniton.

You should NOT set the source aspect ratio to 16:9. Set it to 1:1 vga or 4:3 and full screen. But the video aspect ratio should be 16:9.
