  1. I was interested in getting a LG 4040B. A white box one sells for around $115 shipped. It record/plays all formats including ram at 3x speed. I own a E100 and was thinking about creating fancy menus etc with dvdLab.

I heard that the LG will read and write ram and is able to play my E100 ram movie, but I also heard that it cannot write ram movies. Is this a common thing with all ram writers? I think I would have to rename my VOB files or something like that; I'm still researching it. I wanted to get some input from people before I bought this. Thanks

First off, although the DVD-RAM write speed is rated at 3x, due to its built-in data verification during recording, the actual speed is more like 1.5X (3x writing+3x reading).

Your Panny recorder uses the DVD-VR format on the recorded DVD-RAM disc (RAM movies) and it is different from the more popular DVD-Video format recorded on the DVD-R disc. So you need an authoring software which supports the DVD-VR format such as ULead Media Studio Pro to import and export the DVD-VR RAM disc files:

Theoretically you can record either DVD-Video or DVD-VR format on your DVD-RAM disc using the LG burner (with appropriate software), but only the DVD-VR format disc can be played back on the set top RAM player/recorder and the DVD-Video RAM disc can only be played back on your computer.
