Stutturing sound & Jerky picture with Tmpgenc

I had been creating (x)SVCD until now which run fine. However, after reading the many discussions on Mpeg1 & 2 and also checking the resolution of my sources (downloaded divx movies at 352x240), I decided to try xVCD. I created a few standard 1150 bitrate vcd and higher rate xvcd discs.

My 1150 kb vcd runs fine, but any higher bitrate discs stutter on my standalone. The video also slows, with jerks. This happens even with a 1200 bitrate, though is minimal at this bitrate.

To create the xVCD, I used tmpgenc version 2. I loaded the standard vcd-ntsc template, unlocked it, and raised the bitrate. I tried contant rate at 1200, 1500, 1800, and also tried various 2-pass VBRs with a max of 2400. All has a jerky sound except the fixed 1150.

What am I doing wrong?

It appears your player doesn't accept xVCDs - probably because the drive can only run at 1x.

kinneera is right, a standard VCD has to be encoded with 1150 CBR. All other bitrates and methods like VBR and 2passVBR are not standard and it seems that your player can only play standard VCDs.

You may want to try standard SVCD which is a lot better than VCD. Try to encode something small on a bitrate of 2520 CBR with SVCD (MPEG-2). If this works then your player supports SVCD too and you can try other methods (like VBR).

I tried playing the files on my pc, and they play fine. Thus the problem is probably with my standalone dvd-player.

However, SuperVCD's that I have created use bitrate all the way up to 2500 (including vbr) and play just fine in my standalone. That is why I was thinking that probably my conversion was the problem.

I am trying to use a VCD instead of SVCD because my source is only a 352x240 divx. Thus using extra pixels are just going to be a waste; instead that bitrate could be used for more motion conversion.

I downloaded the XVCD sample from this site, and burned the nero image file. Same problem - stutturing sound and slow/jerky picture. I am using CD-RW, which work fine in my DVD player (I have played many SVCDs). Any comments?
