  1. Like a lot of other people, I'm tempted by the price of the Philips dvdr70, but having looked around, all I can find is reviews on it's recording quality. I'm after any opinions on the sound quality if possible, namely this:

My last dvd player used an optical out to deal with all the sound. From the spec I have read, it seems as though this is not a feature on the Philips, so can I get full 5.1 (or even 6.1) out of it?

Also, is there a sub woofer output, or is that also dealt with by the coaxial cables?

I've noticed that many posters here refer to having the Philips as a "secondary" machine, used mainly for recording - I would only want the one machine, so I need to make sure it does all that I want it too.

Finally, I know there is the issue of a recordable format having to establish itself as the fore runner, like the old VHS / Betamax thing. I'm hoping that by making their machine so nicely priced, Philips will flood the market with their own format, and make it the established leader by default. Any comments?

Thanks for any help - much appreciated,

    Will.

  2. I dont think the DVDR70 has digital audio out connections, only stereo phono connections. If you want 5.1 digital coax connections you need to go for the DVDR80

It's wrong, Philips DVDR70 got digital audio output. Not optical but coaxial most surround receivers got this connector as well.
