  4. Some things you may want to try.

Make sure that you are using DMA on a dedicated capture drive.
    Defragment the capture drive.
Close all unnecessary programs manually or with something like enditall before trying to capture especially anti-virus software.
Try capturing with DVIO instead then importing the DV file into your editing and authoring programs.
    Install the Panasonic DV codec.
Unplug any other firewire devices attached to the card first.
    Try a different firewire card.

These are all the suggestions I have to offer. If all else fails, buy a new system. It does look like you are long overdue.

Are you sure that you are using the NTFS file system? If the computer you have came with WinXP pre-loaded then it should be set up for NTFS but if you upgraded to WinXP from an older version then it is possible you aren't using NTFS.

Other than that I don't know what else to tell you.

You sure maybe you aren't running out of HDD space? One hour of DV is about 13GB give or take.

    Good Luck !

Well a P2 500Mhz is slow ass slow. So it could be a speed factor or rather lack of speed/processing power.

Obviously upgrading the computer (due to cost) may not be something you can do right now (although really should be considered) but at least try a different FIREWIRE card. They range in price from something like $15 to $50 which is really not expensive at all. I mean if it doesn't work you can always return it I guess.

Otherwise I really don't know what more to say about it

  10. I've had similar problems.

Sharp DV camcorder with firewire output
    E-Machine Athlon 1600
256 MB memory, 30 GB free on hard-drive
    Generic firewire card
    Windows XP SP1
Using drivers supplied by card manufacturer.

Computer recognized camcorder immediately and I can use computer to control camcorder controls in most capture programs such as MyDVD or Windows Movie Maker. When I push play though I usually get 1 sec and then everything on the computer is completely frozen even if I disconnect the camcorder or stop the tape. I have to reboot and then the same thing happens on the next attempt.

I will try DVIO and see if that helps.

IRQ Sharing on the Firewire port. Unfortunately , by default, XP shares IRQ's and you can't undo it. Try deleting the Firewire card and re-booting to re-install it, sometimes this will bump the share. Changing slots has the same affect. This can be an issue with non bus-mastering cards(it does say generic).

  12. Device Manager does not show any IRQ conflict with capture card.

Also if there is a conflict then why does computer recognize card and the ability to control camera?

  14. Well you are a bit short on horsepower so you need to make sure that every bit is available.
Using Task Manager go to the Processes tab. You should have between 18 and 22 processes running. If you have more, then some unnecessary processes are running. To find out the minimum processes for your system go to the MSDN web site and search "default processes" or somrthing like that.(I think the same info maybe found in the Resource Kit). When i tuned up my system I disabled 15 processes.
Also try running StartPro to stop useless apps from running at startup.
Run AD-Aware to remove spy and adware that you may not know are running.
Check CPU usage at idle should be around 1%.
Search the web for tune up tips and apply them.
I run a 600 MHZ system and i have no problems.

I could be wrong, but this sounds like a classic heat problem. Doing video stuff on a 500 MHz chip is very taxing on the system, thus heat can build up quite rapidly.

Pop open the case and check to make sure that the fans are running. Remember, that you might have more than one fan (e.g., a case fan, a CPU fan, etc.).

Try to run the capture with the case off. If you can find a small fan that you can blow on the computer, while the capture is running, that would probably be helpful. If it runs with the case off, then you know that you have a heat problem, and you will probably have to buy a fan or something else to cool off the system.

You never said, but when the program freezes, does the whole computer freeze? In other words, do you need to reboot once the program freezes? If so, then I would say that it is a likely heating problem.

Also, if it is a heating problem, you will have to identify the source. If you find a dead fan, then that is the answer, but heat problems can come from almost anywhere. I have run into heating problems three times in the past ten years. Twice it came from the CPU/motherboard and once from a CD drive that was heating up and locking everything up.

I now have four fans inside my case!
