    Hi folks,

I'm going to be doing a project that will involve a number of smaller files that I'll be capturing to PC. Now on my main rig (2GHz P4) file size is not an issue (XP), and I have over 100GIG free. So I'll be pulling in large AVI files via DV and then use TMPGenc plus to convert them to MPEG. However, to get the job done a bit quicker I'd like to use a second machine (1.4GHz celeron) to crunch on some of the files. It only has 14GIG free and runs WinME, so I'll have to keep the file size in check. (not that there is a lot of room anyway)

My question is, what are your thoughts on using the main rig to run a fast compression using a high bitrate CQ mode to bring the massive DV-AVI files into line and then copy them (the machies are networked) over to other machine where I can then re-encode at a lower bit rate with 2-pass VBR. Would I lose quality this way compared to going straight to 2-pass VBR from AVI? (Compressing the AVI is not really an option since I'm capturing DV-AVI)

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Savant

    Reencoding ALWAYS reduces quality!
