I'm a for sure newbie trying to burn a home video project to my new
Sony drive. I've searched the forums here and elsewhere, but I can't find any help at all with this particular problem. My system details are as follows:
Dell Dimension xps b800r 833 mhZ
Windows 98 SE
Firmware 2.0 f
Sonic MyDVD 4.0.4
I have no idea who manufactured the blanks I'm using. They have a
white top and are purple on the recording side. I have downloaded the ADVDInfo utility, but I'm confused about how to actually use it. I am certainly beginning to suspect the media, but they weren't even all that cheap - I paid $Cdn $2.50 a piece, which I would think works out to about $1.50 U.S.
I have burned several discs successfully from ten or eleven minute
.avi clips. The project I'm trying to finish is a 39 minute movie
that consists of four such clips. I've tried several different ways
of getting all four to the disc, assembling the four into one long
clip in Arcsoft ShowBiz (the editing software bundled with MyDVD), and
just importing all four clips to MyDVD (almost like four different
"chapters" to the movie).
When I start the burn, MyDVD goes through its process of rendering,
planning, transcoding, etc. and when it gets to actually writing the
files, it stops partway through (sometimes early, sometimes late) and
gives the following error message "could not complete the last command
because - device error - sense code (6 29 00) power on, reset, or bus
device reset occurred - general DVDErr 403712". Physical inspection
of the disc suggests that not all of the files were written to the
disc (the proportion of "obviously burned" space is too small).
Putting the discs into my standalone player, menu plays fine and I can
start playing the video but the whole thing grinds to a halt at some
point in the movie (again, sometimes early, sometimes late).
As I said, I've never had a "coaster" problem with shorter clips.
It's only with the forty minute one that the problem seems to arise.
I've flashed the firmware up to the latest version, I've disabled or uninstalled all other software that uses packet-writing and I've used the FORCEASPI utility to get to v. 4.6. No luck.
I've also tried doing the burn with everything except the essentials
shut down (nearly empty systray, no virus checker running, etc.) No
luck, obviously.
Suggestions, anyone? What does this error message mean? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time to read,
warwalker

I'm not sure I have any helpful suggestions, but if MyDVD can create a DVD project on your hard drive I would definitely use that option and see if you can get it to complete. Then I'd use Record Now to burn your DVD (that software will have come with your drive -- it's what I use with my Sony internal which is essentially the same unit).
A lot of low-end DVD authoring programs don't correctly burn DVDs -- best to use a program like Nero or Record Now which specialize in that process. At the very least this will separate the creation of the DVD from the burning process.
If MyDVD can't do this I would strongly recommend you get the free beta version of DVDLab and try it -- it's all I use with my Sony and you may find it to be *much* better for authoring purposes (the final release price will be $79 and it blows away all DVD authoring programs costing hundreds more). Right now it's available at:

(but note this link may not work in a few days as the new beta always negates the old link)."Like a knife, he cuts through life, like every day's his last" -- Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang -
I also have a Sony DRX 500 ULX.
I have not tried burning avi's directly to DVD through Sonic. I have had no problem when I convert the avi's to DVD format with TMPGEnc then burned the video and audio files created there with Sonic. Have gotten whole movies on DVD that way.
You have to remember to drag and drop the audio file on top of the video file in the dvd menu created in Sonic though. -
Thanks again to both of you for taking the time to read and attempt to help. I will try your suggestions and let you know. I know from my earlier research that there are others out there with the dreaded 6 29 00 sense code error that are still trying to figure things out, and i kinda feel like frodo on a quest now.
okay, crap, i need to sleep for a bit.
thanks to anyone who has thoughts to offer, i'll be sure to post a follow up to give everyone some closure.

All:
It's working now. My guess is it was a system-to-burner speed issue; I tried hooking the DRX-500ULX up with firewire instead of USB cables, and I've burned four in a row with no problems at all.
I will try some different authoring software (if only just to get some expanded capabilities).
Thanks for the suggestions,

Yes i can confirm this too. I was having same problems, connecting to firewire solved them all. Not a single coaster now.
There is something with usb and sony.
