I want to move some avi files from one computer to another, to save disk space I was going to zip them. Will this corrupt the video quality at all?

if they are compressed avi's -- zipping them will not compress them much more and would be a major waste of time ..

If the AVI files are already compressed (using a format like DivX or Xvid) then the difference between the orginal and zipped version of the file in terms of size will be minimal, due to the already compressed nature of the file.

ok thanks, I guess it won't make a difference then. I have another stupid question then. Can I burn the files on a dvd-rw (fit more on it) using a regular cd burner? I'm not trying to change the format at all, just trying to get them off the other computer.

it might be still worth you using zip for creating archives (with no compression) as you will get the option of splitting the archive into exact CDR sized chunks. This would come in handy also if you were using some other method of xfring the files. Get some nics or usb network cables and join your pcs. This will save you a lot of time in file xfr and you could encode on one while capturing on the other?.

Pull the harddrive, and stick it in the other computer on the 2nd controller cable (unplug and other devices). This is absolutely the fastest way (short of GB ethernet).

Networking the two won't work. I'm trying to transfer the files from my parent's computer (at their house) to my computer (at my house) so I need to make the files mobile. I just didn't want to burn a ton of disks to move them.
I don't think they'd appreciate my taking their hard drive either LOL -
go out and buy a used 9 gig hard drive for 10$ (like on ebay)

Yep..You can buy a caddy for a removable HD as cheap as anything...or as someone else suggested..just unplug the HD and take it to your parents..the easiest and cheapest way..as long as u dont do something stoopid like dropping it !
And if you want to burn to a DVD-R then buy a DVD burner ! -
I have a dvd burner at my house, which is why I have the dvd disks. I think the hard drive is probably the best option. Thanks
