I have a Sony DVP-S530D that will not play CD-R(W) VCD's according to Sony Customer Care. Does anyone know of a patch that can be copied onto the VCD to make a DVD player recognize the CD-R(W) as a pre-recorded ( manufactured ) VCD or DVD?

I'm afraid it isn't as simple as a firmware update - the hardware is physically different. DVD players which can read CD-R/RW have a second laser using a different IR wavelength.
I believe the problem is that the reflective layer (or the dye) used in CD-Rs isn't very reflective to light in the wavelengths used by DVD lasers.
One possible ray of hope is I've heard: different CD-R manufacturers use different dyes. There is a rumour that some of these work in standard DVD player. Search the web for "Shinco" DVD players, since I think the drive mechanism is the same as the Sony.

You could try and get your player modified at some electronics store.
