Non-DV capture cards by their very nature grab top field first. I know quite wel how to use an ATI card, see lordsmurf.com for guides

The hardware dictates this, not you.

  8. There is no selection for field order in the ATI MMC software. There may be a registry setting for this, I don't know.

However, there was at least one version, I believe it was 7.1, which DID reverse the field order when capping MPEG-2. When using it, I had to reverse the settings when re-encoding. A subsequent version, also using different ATI drivers on the same card, solved the "problem". This has been documented by other posts on this site in the past.

So it IS possible, and not dictated solely by hardware. Unfortunately, I don't recall exactly which version caused the effect.
