    I'm trying to convert some video files to Divx or Xvid, and all I get is junk.

    This is what I do:
    + Open the file
    + Select video-> compression->Divx or Xvid. That's it, I don't change anything else.

    When I try to convert, I get a black screen or a bunch of video, with green/blue colors as background. Do I need to compress the audio too?

    I tried once with huffyuv and the ouput video was skew vertically. I have seen this with another programs, but I don't know what is the reason of it. Any ideas?

    thanks

    Where did the files come from? Did you check your codecs (G Spot) and check for bad frames (Virtual Dub)?
    Hello.

    They are straight from capture, and they look fine. I use no compresion for capturing. But I'm trying to remove some parts and compress them to Divx or Xvid, with no luck

    You captured in RAW video? I don't think your Disk subsystem can do that. Must be some native capture codec.

    You can't convet to DivX/XviD without setting some properties. 1 pass, 2 pass, N pass, min/max/average bitrate, filelength, quality, there are lots of settings you can adjsut.

    Adjsuting nothing guarantees poor results (10 second keyframe is the most obvious).

    When capturing I get the option to compress in YUV, and you have the option to recompress, but I don't choose anything. The captured video and audio is fine, my problem is to convert it to Divx or Xvid.

    I use the defualt properties for the Divx or Xvid. I don't have internet at home right now, but I'll check the guides and see if I can get something. I thought the default options would get you some usable video.
