  1. I bought a CPU/MB comb last week. The CPU is sold as AMD XP2400+. But
    after I installed window XP on the new CPU/MB, I checked

    Control Panel -> System -> General.

    Window XP says that it is AMD1800+. Does anyone know if this is what
    I should expect? Is there some utility I can use to test the CPU speed?

    By the way, the CPU looks like brand new and the lable on the CPU is
    AMD2400xxxxxxxxxx.

    btw, I have a barton 2500+ and if I change the FSB in the BIOS to overclock it, winXP will detect it as a 3200+. so check your BIOS.
    also you might be sold an overclocked 1800+

  3. I know your problem...

    Your CPU is UNDERCLOCKED.

    Go into your computers BIOS, and up the FSB from 100 to 133. There should be an autodetect function, but obviously in your case that hasn't worked.

    NOTE: If you have PC1600 DDR RAM, this won't work and you'll need new RAM. If you have PC100 SDR RAM, this wont work either.

    ALSO, check your motherboard manual for a jumper on the motherboard. Sometimes you don't have to touch the BIOS, you can just change a jumper on the board.

    Simple maths:

    Underclocked 1800, =100 = 18

    180x133 = 2394.

    I know thats not the MHz, but it works with the gradings aswell.

  4. Thanks a lots for the quick response. I read the manual that says it will automatically
    detect the CPU speed. So I did not change the MB jumper. The jumper was set to
    100MHz. It looks like the problem is that CPU is under clocked. thanks again.

    Had a similar problem with my XP2400, system said it was an XP1800. Checked m/board (Gigabyte) manual and changed jumper settings. Now reads correctly as an XP2400.

    You will have to change the jumper on the mobo to the 133 setting in order for your cpu to function correctly.......

  7. These guys know what they are talking about.
    100x15=1500mhz (1800+)
    133x15=1995mhz (2400+)

    When it says they auto detect the CPU, it detects the model number and info like that as well as the multiplier. But not the FSB.
    The FSB is 100 default on the board to notwh damage atever CPU you deside to put in.

  8. It was caused by the 100MHz FSB. I first changed "CPU speed" in BIOS and
    it didn't work. Actually, the computer would not even boot. I have to reset
    BIOS and changed the MB jumper. And it now shows as AMD 2400+. The interesting
    things is that I read entire manual and could not find anywhere mentions what
    jumper should be set for each CPU. It only says there are three FSB choices,
    100, 133, and 166. Then, there is my next question. I know it now works on
    133. Does anyone know what will happens if I set FSB to 166?

    Many thanks to all of your!

  9. Most likely it would not boot.
    166x15=2490mhz
    It would be overclocked.
    You would have to increase voltage,have fast RAM and very good cooling.
    Highly not recommended.
    An Athlon 3200+ is 200x11=2200mhz btw.
