  1. I read the following on a review of the Panasonic DMR-E100HS:
I agree with all the great things that everyone has been saying about the unit, but If you are looking forward to copying some of your own DVD to the HDD, you better think twice. Almost at the end of a poorly written operating instructions manual, there is a small little line that says "Cannot Dub from the Disc" this should be in bold letter on the top of the box. instead the hide it in the back of the manual. I ending up hooking my old sony DVD to the AVin, and that did the trick, so I hope this help those of you who are looking for the function that does not exist in this unit.
Is this unique to the 100HS or a characteristic of other Panasonic recorders? Other brands of recorders? I just assumed this was possible!

    Thanks!

  2. This is true of the E100. I'm assuming it would be the same for the E80 and HS2. They don't scream it in the manual, but it is stated with the other dubbing possibilities (and don'ts). This is the same of all discs, copy-writed or not. You can dub them using another player with the AV in as stated provided it doesn't have macrovision/CGMS, or if you have defeated it using one of the various devices discussed in this forum.

You can dub from DVD-Ram to the HD though. It claims the Ram disk will be erased when this is completed. I will be trying this very soon. So if you have a method of straight copying (not re-encoding) your DVD-R to DVD-Ram on your computer, you might achieve the same result (or record on Ram in the first place if you know you are going to do this). It has been mentioned that Ulead MF2 will burn a Ram disk to DVD-R with no re-encoding provided there is no further editing/shrinking to be done, so perhaps you can go the opposite way, too.

  3. Thanks very much for the helpful reply. Is this unique to the Panasonics? Would the Pioneer units, for example, have the same limitations?
