Ok, I was under the impression that when backing up that the disk name needs to be the same as the original DVD. I understand that. But what happens when you have 2 movies and use the join function in DVD2One? Do the same rules apply or do you just need to make the DVD name the same as the first movie?

So, why then in all the tutorials does it mention that you need to keep the name of the movie on the new dvd rip. Is it just to play in real dvd players for the tv. Does it not matter when just playing on a computer?

... because ultimately some newbie will do it wrong if that step is omitted or spelled out differently.

So then, what everyone is saying is that I can name a dvd anything I want within reason and it will play in my computer and on a dvd player. Is that correct?

  6. The file standard for naming means something to some players and nothing to others. In general it is a good idea to use all caps and no spaces. An underscore character is also accepted practice. I have never seen a computer balk at a strange DVD name, but the older set-top players can be more finnicky. so "The Usual Suspects" should probably be written "THE_USUAL_SUSPECTS" Not renaming was just a way of telling newbies to do what the more experienced DVD producers did and maintain DVD naming standards.

Tutorials (especially those I write) say use the same name because mostly the newbies are the ones reading the tutiorals

ultimately you can name it anything as long as it still follows standard naming format (ie no illlegal characters)

So if make a dual layer into 2 disks just name one movie
    MY_DVDNAME_1
    and the other
    MY_DVDNAME_2

    or
    DVDNAME_1
    DVDNAME_2

    or
    MOVIENAME_DISC_1
    MOVIENAME_DISC_2

the list goes on and on and on
