I seem to have 2 problems which have never occured b4 -
1. I can open files ok in tempgenc, but when i go to the mpeg tools and try to cut a film i get "could not open this file with directshow (0x80040111)"
2. Some other film files i can open in my software dvd player, but they won't open in windows media player
these are both about mpegs that have been converted from avi using tmpgenc

It sounds like maybe your MPEG-2 codec has been messed up somehow. (I'm assuming this because you say you can't play your MPEG-2 (SVCD) mpeg clips in WMP).
Try uninstalling PowerDVD, rebooting, then re-installing it.
That should restore your MPEG-2 codec.
Let us know how you get on.

Correct me if I'm wrong but WMP cant play vcd's right?

Install the free MPEG2 codec from the tools section. You need a true MPEG2 codec to cut files, not just FFDShow (which will render a file, but not let you manipulate/cut it).
You can view a divx with FFDShow, but not create one.To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
I don't know the details of that dll exactly, but in general:
VCD = MPEG-1
SVCD/DVD = MPEG-2
DivX, xVid = MPEG-4 (and versions of WMV, QT, RM etc..)
It sounds like your codecs are just in a mess.
You haven't installed a codec pack by any chance have you?!
I would be tempted to re-install Windoze if all else fails.

thats what i'm thinking of doing (and yes i tried tsunami pack)
Strangest think tho - just restarted my pc and now the film loads at the mpeg tools-merge and cut tab, but when i try to move the slider i get the "tmpgenc.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close etc" appears to be something to do with dvdvideo.ax
If ne1 has any ideas i will try and then if not i think a windows re-install -
uninstall the codec pack if you still can, if not re-format/re-install.
A lot of people here recommend against using any codec packs for exactly this reason - they usually seem to create far more problems that they solve.
General consensus seems to be to install gSpot or something similar, and only download new codecs as and when you need them.
good luck!
