Everyone has various techniques using various software for various results.

You'd do best to start with the Guides - From Capture, Convert, Author, all on the left, and adjust procedures depending on what you want to do.

    typo
    There's no place like 127.0.0.1

I see. :c) But you don't say what you use to capture, so it's kind of hard to guess.

  7. i have tried pretty much everything......i tried a few programs like DVIO but they captured to DV, which is far too big even when you convert it to a smaller format it is still too big. So i tried virtual dub but it didnt work and i also tried windows movie maker, really small size but the quality was crap. I then tried ulead DVD movie factory, i got good quality at quite small size 480mb......will wmv compress this down much?

what capture software can i use for what i want then?

The best about it is it is so easy to use, very poowerful, and you do not need any other software to capture, edit, and burn to disk.

When it crashes does it look like your CPU is overworked (clocking at 100% or so)? If it is, shut down all unnecessary applications, and try again after a reboot.

do you mean processes because video studio was the only application running?

if you do mean processes, is there any thing bad that can happen if i close one.

Bring up the Task Manager, and check the CPU speed.

    He's probably running 98

doesn't have a real task manager that tells you what the CPU load is..With 98 you need a freeware utility to tell you..
    I think he's seen a FAT 32 limit maybe?

Or loose that STUDI 7 or STUDIO 8 application..both are rotten (they work but why?)
TRY SCEENALYZER for DV capture ..even has an audio meter in the pay version (the freeware is fully functional also)

I suppose it really would help if he completed his "Computer Details" data.

Format is great for your hard drive activity. But once in a while, VS does weird things to me as well, like crashing on boot up,, carshing on selecting functions. That is when I do a system restore.

If using another applicaion to capture
    maybe only as a tes
still doesn't fix your problem, then maybe yu have a big system conflict

Open the device manager and look for exclamation points
check whether any resoursces are poorly shared
    Programs>accessories>system tools>systeminformation>expand out on the left>HARDWARE> got to conflicts/sharing and/or problem hardware

    anything odd?

  23. its only video studio.......i'll have a look into what you said

i dont think a system restore would be good because i dont know where to restore it to, a format would probably do the trick but i cannot be arsed to do it. i mean the format is ok, but installing everything again, no way!

Does not matter where you restore it to. You ned your system files restored. Like I said, it fixes these types of problems I get with Video Studio. But the choice has always been, and always will be yours.

If you want to put them on the net and are running XP, Windows Movie Maker has a few options you might want to consider:
