After 15 months of nearly flawless recording sessions, my Philips DVDR-985 decided to abruptly quit and turn off, displaying the alphanumeric message of AB-FO9FED. As the unit is 3 months out of warranty I'm wondering if it is worth spending more $ trying to revive it (Philips says it must be sent to them for a minimum $125 plus parts), or getting something else. When you've already spent close to $1000 you think long and hard about it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Dont know what it is like in the US (I'm assuming due to the $) but here in the UK we have a law that states that goods must be 'fit for purpose', most people think that it only covers the 1st year, however a recent court case deemed that it is reasonable to expect certain products to last much longer (e.g. washing machine >>>> 12 months, TVs >> 3-5 years, etc.). Take it back to the shop or Philips and demand they fix it free of charge (tell them you're going to buy a Panasonic and that you will tell all your friends to do the same), it is totally out of order to be asked to pay more, and totally reasonable for it to last at least 3-5 years in my opinion.
Doesn't really help you but maybe its worth a try, after all they can only say no. -
Jukka is right thing should last 3 to 5 years. But some time's you get a lemon it happen's. That law you have in the UK is a very good law.
One thought If you made your self a small cube PC put in a Dazzle 2 or ati or why not put both in then put in a Pioneer AO6. And if some thing break's you can fix it your self. And editting is better on the PC with MPEg2VCR and TMPG and you can capture as high as you want then encode back down with IC7 or IC8 and CloneDVD DVD2ONE dvdshrink.
Keep in mind that that DVD laser's or CD burner's the more you use the laser the more it start's to die. But a good laser should last very long cheep laser seem to die fast.
I had two Ricoh burner's both same model both die in one year. I have two HP CDR burner's both are three years old no problem's. I have a LG burner in my other PC no problem one time it would not burn any thing. I had to hit the power switch in the back of the PC for one day after that it works fine no problem's. I had this happen with one Of my VCR's would not work had to unplug it. Now works fine.
If any you have equipment use a "Surge Protector"
