  1. I have recently purchased a Canopus ADVC-100 with high hopes. I read rave reviews and I have since spent close to 20 hours trying to figure out how to make it capture analog video. My problem is 2 fold:

    1) I use Pinnacle Studio 8 to capture. The first capture went seemingly fine. Since then, I can only see a black screen in the capture window and am unable to capture any video. Acts as if the 1394 wire is not even connected.

    2) Even after the first successful capture, the AVI file that was created was unable to be opened by any media player on my PC. I received a Source File Error when trying to play. GSpot says that I have the proper codec to play the file. I don't know what gives.

I am stumped. I captured analog with no problem before using a cheap Pinnacle Linx USB device which allowed me to play all captured AVI files in any media player with no problem and then edit and encode to MPEG. Now I cannot get anything to work at all. I run Windows XP Home edition and have DirectX 9.0 installed. I have read so many posts my eyes hurt. I know this device is great but I really need some help. Please help me. I am desperate.

Why don't you try the Canopus forum? http://forum.canopus.com/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=GenADVC

You can try to use Windows Movie Maker to capture. You won't get sound when capturing, but it will be there on playback. Don't upgrade to WMM2, WMM1 is much easier to use for capture...

I don't think the capture program is as important when using the ADVC-100 since the coverting is being done outside the computer. Of course, I may be wrong, someone please inform me if I am...

    Me too.

I've had the ADVC-100 for a while now and never had a problem capturing analog using Windows Movie Maker, Ulead MovieFactory, and an old Dazzle software that I can't remember (long since deleted it).

That's why I suggested the Canopus forum.

The truth? It's most likely going to be Studio 8 at fault. You could try DVio, amcap, or dvapp from the tools section at the left, or the links in the post. But you may have to uninstall studio 8, which is a task unto itself, Pinnacle has special uninstall patches to clean your system, you should go to their web site if you choose to uninstall.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

  6. I appreciate the responses. I have uninstalled everything with Pinnacle's name on it. I then installed a new trial version of the ScLive to capture with. Same problem. The video is not coming through to capture software for some reason. The screen just stays blank. Like it is not capturing. I am disgusted. This should be so easy. Plug in. Press play. Start capturing. I feel like an idiot.

And I have posted this same question, or a similar version of it on Canopus' forum as well as Pinnacle's. They have been absolutely no help. Thanks again. I will keep trying and hoping for other ideas.

  7. I don't wish to insult you by stating the obvious, but I assume you have got ANALOG INPUT selected on the ADVC-100 ? (the silver button toggles the mode between analog or digital input). Out of the box I think it is set to default to digital input on power on, but this can be changed by setting the dip switches underneath.

I use the ADVC-100 with Studio 8 and have had no problems at all.

    Regards

    Simon

No offense taken. At this point, anything goes. Yes, the correct light is on. I did change a couple of the dip switched from the original settings when I first got the product.

I did mistate earlier. I in fact have DirectX9.0b not 9.0. I do not know if this makes a difference.

Also, is it possible that there is a codec missing or something? I know I am reaching, but I am almost out of ideas. I mean, different software, same result. Black screen. Device manager recognizes the device, but it's like none of the software is receiving any data stream.

  9. Hmmm...
I would try to reinstall the firewire drivers.
I have a feeling that your XP update himself again (Is your automatic update is on ?) and screwed up the FIREWIRE drivers.

Otherwise , maybe there is something wrong with the
    advc-100 , maybe its defective ?

Yes, my auto update is on. How do I uninstall/reinstall the firewire drivers?

  11. Hello.
I have Canopus ADVC 1394 and some experience with ADVC family product. In my 2 cases, both using Windows XP SP1, after first capture, ADVC can't capture anything. Canopus has release a patch for Windows XP SP1 and higher, it's call 1394 Filter. There are 2 files in this Filter pack, first to install and second to uninstall this filter. ADVC 50, 100 and 1394 have the same problem with SP1, and can't work in SP1, if you install this filter, you can fix this bug. I don't think that it's a firewire's problem, it's really ADVC problem.
After install Canopus Filter pack, video quality "seem to be" brighter (it's my opinion only), but I don't have time to try with another tapes.
