  1. Excuse my ignorance if I am asking a dumb question:

I have had great results using the ADVC-100 to convert my old HI-8 tapes to DVD. I have now moved on to my newer tapes which are mini-DV.

1 - Firstly should I be able to plug my DV camcorder into the ADVC-100 using the front 4-pin firewire socket? If I try this I am unable to capture anything in Pinnacle Studio 8 (the tape counter is displayed and is synchronised with the camcorder but no audio/video is received).

2 - As my source is DV, is there any benefit in trying to put it through the ADVC-100 ? (other than the fact it gives me a convenient place to plug my camera in without having to bother unplugging other cables etc).

If I plug my DV camcorder directly into the firewire port on the back of the computer (i.e no ADVC-100) it captures perfectly, but it is a hassle to connect it up in this way.

    Any feedback very much appreciated

  2. Regarding #1, yes you should be able to plug the camera input into the front Firewire. Both the front and back Firewire ports are supposed to be input/output ports.

  3. I got a question. Do you get perfect quality on your monitor when connecting your vcr/dv camcorder thru the advc?

There is absolutely no benefit in using the ADVC rather than your conventional firewire.
After all, you're only transferring the footage.
I'm about to but the ADVC-100 but I'll always connect my Sony MiniDV to my firewire card and 'capture' using Pinnacle Studio
