I think we've got to do something here: Every (well, many at least) noob question mostly results in a torrent of questions regarding the legality of what said noob intends to achieve. I know the mods have asked us to help them track down posts (and users) violating the forum rules, and even started a forum for these reports (quite entertaining reading, that forum is! ) but leave it at that. If you think someone is violating a forum rule, report it to the mods in the forum created for this, let them make the call, and stop hijacking the threads, all mod wannabes!

I don't know which is worse...

... NEWBS demanding answers, yelling HELPPP MEEEE, and asking how to magically convert the downloaded illegal garbage to perfect DVD

    -OR-

... the experienced members jumping on questions that could be either way. But most of the ones that get jumped on deserve it for not reading. Only see a few from time to time that are unwarranted.

It's not all that bad... just annoying...

That has nothing to do with what I was referring to. Of course, if it's obvious (to those of us that's been using this great site for a while) that what the noob wants to know is already covered in great detail in one or more guides/how tos, he/she should be gently (once) directed in that direction.
What I'm reacting against, is the self appointed mod, who sees it as his/her sole taskt to point out that the noob probably is dealing in warez (as per site definition) and keeps on trying to prove his/her case in the thread this noob has started, outposting every attempt at really trying to help (or at least point him/her in the right direction) the noob in question.

We (admin and mods) are discussing it in our private moderator forum. We will probably add a rule or sticky topic about it and then warn users who continues to post such posts.

  6. I couldnt agree more.

I get the impression that some people are just waiting for noob posts so they can jump in n start shouting about how wrong/stoopid/lazy/illegal they or wot they want to do is.

Lets face it, the vast majority of us are here to find out about copying copyrighted DVDs, and that is ILLEGAL ! It gets me when people try n kid themselves it isnt .

Wether or not "the vast majority of us are here to find out about copying copyrighted DVDs" is true or not, and I am not suggesting an answer either way, the legality of such an activity depends very much on your location and the interpretation of the laws there. AFAIK, no-one has yet been prosecuted, and been found guilty, for copying a legally obtained DVD, for their own private use, anywhere in the world. Assuming I am right on this please be more careful with such generalisations as they can too easily lead to misunderstandings and innacuracies.

Speaking from the newbie/noob point of view, I am annoyed by the constant, "tell me how to make a DVD" type of question also. I imagine some people come to this site and expect to be given the magic answer by a video guru instead of realizing they need to read, research, and study for themselves. If they don't speak English that well, this could be a lot more difficult for them than it is for those of us who do speak English. I appreciate the patience of those members (Gees especially) who don't seem annoyed by the ignorant enthusiasm of newbies (mine included).

I think it's not inappropriate for experienced members to respond with, "read the guides, for God's sake!" or whatever, but accusations of illegal activity are not appropriate. The posts in question should be reported to the mods.

I think some members lose their temper because (1) it's another newbie asking to be babied and (2) it's another newbie asking to be babied so they can make their possibly illegal DVD. VERY IRRITATING!!!

mats, I'm not sure this is what you're talking about, but I think that it's completely warranted to scold a newb when they ask a question like " just downloaded the Matrix:Revolution screener. How do I burn it to DVD?" That's right there on the "Before you reply..." list.

Also, maybe I'm wrong, but I thought this was a type of community. It's nice to see members police each other calmly (which is 99% of the time), rather than cry to the mods for every little thing. Though, it is a bit over-zealous when they "double dip" (warn the newb and cry to the mods).

I personally think that everyone should , but first they have to join. Of course everyone wants to say , but is that right? Maybe if they would offer some Everything would be okay. Of if they wrote a they would understand it. But no, no one does, so they up and form and have their own . But still, we have guides here , but they still ask obvious questions. When all they really wanna say is

I agree about the first part - the rules are simple, and if you don't understand them, your chances of ever converting anyting to anything are zero.
For the second part - it depends on how it's asked. If asked politely, I think a pointer to the right place to look for the answer is the best medicine. If rude and demanding, then a bit of spanking might be required before applying some pointing. Just like raising kids, really (Not that I'd ever spank my daughter - God forbid!)
...and tgpo - Yes, that was one of the funniest posts I've ever read! Took you some time to put that one togehter, I'm sure!

  13. I am in agreement that newbie bashing is wrong and newbie posts asking for information on how to do something against the forum rules is wrong (notice how I didnt say illegal).

I think that it is true (to a degree myself included) that some folks scan the posts looking for forum violating posts and put some offhanded remarks in the post, but in general, most of them that I have seen are replied with an even handed "against forum rules. you are being reported to a moderator".

We all have had experiences with newbies and we all have been ones ourselves (except TGPO ). It does get tiring answering the same questions over and over. This post has made me take a second look at how I reply to certain posters. In my mind, I have only scolded newbies a few times (probably more), but as of late, I have realized that is a waste of my time and a waste of the boards resources. Better to just send the potentially offending post to the "report violations" post and let the mods deal with it. Some of the mod wannabe's (at times, myself included) are just looking for a way to make themselves look good and make themselves superior to the poster. It is extremely evident in a number of the posts that I read.

Maybe its time to institute a policy the if a reader reviews post that is suspected of violating the forum rules, they report it with their comments and let the mods decide. For posters that ask how to convert a DVD, either ignore the post, post a link to the guide(s), or explain to them how to do this. Violations to the above policy will result in the offending poster receiving a "yellow pillow".

Yeah, sometimes I just scan the complaints thread looking for which established member is acting the arse this week , although like you say, it's more often than not in the thread itself and then in the complaints thread.
A good post, and something that irrates me no end and the reason I created this here.

I always felt for the first two weeks meant you could only post in newbie section was a good idea, but I appreciate people coming for from ddom9 for instance, with a real contribution to make, would be pretty pissed at this idea.

  17. I think that their are some established members who for some reason or another deem it their responsibility to instantly start flaming a member if they feel it violates the forum rules.

If someone sees something that violates, or looks like violating the forum rules then simply report the thread and let a moderator or admin deal with it. Their has been too many examples of late were a person has been 'bashed' for violating the forum rules in which no such violation took place (a downloaded movie is not always illegal people).

As for a way to answer to newbie's post that clearly haven't been researched. Either politely direct them to the resources that answer the question (be it a guide or an existing thread) or ignore the post and move on.

Whilst the majority of new members may not be beneficial to the community we still run the risk of scaring away those that will turn into long run contributors to this site.

Dear Lord. I maybe most laid-back person on the Forum and lately, there have been times I'd like to just light-up some lazy dolt who doesn't want to put 1/2 an IQ point into learning the hobby.

Yeah, I'm not real big on freeloaders, either. And they have been fruitful and are multiplying rapidly.
