I have read on vcdhelp that scan converters usually provide
better picture quality than TV out from gfx cards. Is this
true? If anyone tried a scan converter before please
give me some suggestions and suggest what brand to get
thanks a lot

I work at a college in Distance Learning and we use a Ultra Scan Do Plus to convert PC vga output to broadcast component out. On the Sony monitors we use to monitor the broadcast out it looks okay bearing in mind this is a $4200 scan converter. At home I output my ATI AIW into my Phillips TV with a 'multimedia' preset for video settings. This is a $150 solution and I can tell you I certainly don't see a $4k difference. I play divx back using the tv out and get a much better picture than using divxplus thru my hollywood + card. Bottomline is if you have a decent TV with s-video in and control over the video settings (color temp, noise reduction, contrast, sharpness etc...) I think you can get a darn good picture with a tv out video card.

I went and bought a Ultim Mate Grand 2000 for $100 bucks down at CompUsa a few months ago. It has an s-video, and rca out jack on it so you can go either way. It puts out to the tv fine, except that it's not like looking at the computer. You wouldn't be able to read anything on the screen, at least from most programs with normal sized text. As far as movies go, they're watchable, but you do see some "flicker", or something... my guess would be due to cable length (20 ft) or some kind of synchronization problem. For 100 buck it's not worth worrying about, unless you're copying to VHS... which makes it look worse! Anyways, some food for thought!
