- a plan of what you want on the site
- a text editor
- an image editor
- a list of HTML code
- a working "caps lock" key... yours seems to be stuck.- housepig

Housepig Records
out now:
Various Artists "Six Doors"
Unicorn "Playing With Light" -
Notepad + knowledge.
/Mats -
A CAPS LOCK UNLOCKER would help too...
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons. -
Photoshop
Swish
Frontpage
Dreamweaver
Just to name a few. -
As Housepig said above, make sure you plan what you want. A good website should first be planned on paper before even starting on the coding.

-Have some respect for your visitors by not making a page that'll take forever to load (you'll find most cool sites are pretty basic and don't go overboard with unnecessary content)
-Realize that many people aren't using the same web browsers or versions...so you'll want to keep things simplified in order for it to be seen by all who visit.
You really don't need any fancy tools to build a site...your own imagination and content of your site is what counts.
Microsoft Office will work...or as mentioned, any text editor.
Front Page, Adobe Page Maker or Page Mill if you want something a little more advanced.
Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator if you want to do your own illustrations and designs...though many image programs will work as well.
And...you'll need an FTP program to upload the contents of your site.
WS_FTP will do.
Shop around for a host that'll supply you with the space and bandwidth you'll need...compare prices and what all the package includes.
Register your domain name - and if you want privacy...

Otherwise, all your personal info is made public.
Depending on what type of site you're planning on, you could also go with any free hosting site, if you don't mind banners and popups all over it.
You have many restrictions on use of content, bandwidth and space though ...so keep that in mind. -
I took a website course in high school and we used these:
Macromedia Dreamweaver(for all the html stuff)
Macromedia Flash(for animations)
Macromedia Fireworks(for image editing)
If you dont know html...this would probably be your best bet. These are reletively easy programs to learn and are very addictive(especially flash)! -
No Flash!!!
I vote for:
Photoshop
bbedit (Or Notepad for you PC users)
That's it. -
Well dont know about cool, but for simplicity, paintshop pro and frontpage. I am a complete newbie to web design and have created 2 sites using these tools with no instruction from anyone. Just picked them up and taught myself.
They are here if you want to see what a complete novice can create.
www.geocities.com/afcsouthside
www.geocities.com/markhowardgolf
I got adventurous with the second one and used frames -
I use FrontPage and the photos on my computer using the scanner from the photos itself.
I make html documents on my computer and then upload them to the ISP server.
This is very basic and I do it all myself. I just insert anything into the webpage and just do it like word processing. Web designing is a very easy thing to do and then re-design it, as many times I like.
I have to learn more on web designing and other apps as well such as Flash and Photoshop.
I prefer to make things simple and easy for visitors. Don't make your website look too crowded with everything. Keep it spacious and straightforward. Put a little color into as well.
I have three websites and they are all identical and the Internet addresses are different in each one.
My latest website's mail forwarding and the POP3 aren’t working after waiting over 36 hours. I am still waiting for the e-mails to work and getting impatient. The other website’s email is working.
I emailed to the domain host and nothing yet? I am wondering why it is taking so long and what is wrong? I may have to fix the settings on the server? I wait and see.
Anyway, I also use Yahoo! for my webpage as well and this one got popup ads and I don’t mind as it is free.
I know how to fix Yahoo’s “Advanced HTML Editor” to update anything such as to update the URL link or change the text. -

I am happy now. I am just about to get rid of the Hotmail addresses as the inboxes is too small. -

Why don't you pry the "caps lock" key out of the board?
I did on my old board, and am gonna do it to this damn thing one of these days. I watch what I type, meaning I look at the keys, and it really, really pisses me off to type a sentence or 2 and look up to see 2rows of caps. -
a "website ripper" so you can pinch someone else's cool site and change the title.

For making optimized web graphics (not too many, of course), Photoshop or PSP is a must.
All that Macromedia stuff you don't need. Jut find tutorials on straight-up html. I think Dreamweaver is overkill at a 40+ mbs download.
And if you must use Flash, go with SwiSH.
FTP is not always necessary. -
Frontpage isnt a bad start for beginners...but you might as well take the time to learn dreamweaver if dont want to do the code. It gives you a lot more freedom. -
I personally don't mind Frontpage that much, normally if I use it though I go through using Notepad and remove all the junk it puts in.

Just my opinion; sorry, had to do it
Like Craig I started with Frontpage and put a couple of sites together which, as they're all my own work, I'm very proud of.
I've since found it a little limited but would still recommend it to anyone starting out to at the very least get their site up and running.

For beginners Dreamweaver and Frontpage are very good. But I would suggest that that person also try to learn about html at the same time. Make your page using those programs and then look at the source of the page. Study the code and pretty soon you can figure out what each tag does and what its supposed to look like. Pretty soon, you won't be dependant on any program and you can do it all on your own using notepad and you won't have any extra "garbage" code that programs tend to add.

We all do it.
Like I say I have taken small images to suit my purpose but all I meant was I like to know it's all my own work, even if I've had guidance on doing it.
