  1. Hi,

I've been trying to capture with V-Dub (and process avi-files that have been captured with other utility's) for weeks and weeks now. I'm getting more and more frustrated, because it doesn't seem possible to get an avi-file out of V-Dub (any version) that will play correctly in V-Dub itself or in any media-player.

What happens? Avi-files captured with another utility (f.i: iuVCR) play wonderfully well in any media-player, like Windows Media Player. But when I try to process the file in V-Dub, the result is terrible; it seems that audio and video can't keep up with each other - after the first second or so the audio starts to "stutter" (plays in small, very regular seperated "chunks") and the video sometimes seems to be slowed down or it starts to "stutter" as well. The same thing happens when I try to capture video (incl. audio) with VirtualDub.
The problem seems to get worse, the higher the I set the capturing-resolution. With 384x288 there are no problems at all. With 640x480 it is already quite annoying and with "full PAL" it looks and sounds terrible.
However; as soon as I de-activate audio ("audio">"no audio") in V-Dub, the video plays perfectly and I can process it anyway I want to.

    I use a Dell Dimension 8200 with 1.8 GHz P-4 with 512 MB PC800 RDRAM & 7200rpm IDE H-drive, Windows XP Home, nVidia 64MB Ti200 GeForce3, Creative Soundblaster Live! Value, TerraTValue PCI-card.

I have searched several forums, but with no result so far. I'm under the impression however, from what I read about similar problems, that there exists a incompatibility between V-Dub and Creative Labs sound-cards. (Could this have something to do with my problem?)

I hope that someone can help me solve this problem, because I am convinced of the great value of VirtualDub in video-processing, although I haven't been able to use the application for any serious processing so far.

    Thanks!!!

First things first, your Capture Card might not be able to capture at higher resolutions, so keep it at either 352x288 for PAL or 352x240 for NTSC.

All my capturing and editing is done using VirtualDub, and i've never had any problems using it.

Also you mention about the Audio going out of sync, i don't know about VirtualVCR but in VirtualDub there is an option to Sync the Audio to Video, so when checked the audio is in sync with the video in the final avi.

And last but not least, i'm using a Creative Labs Soundblaster 5.1 soundcard for my audio in, and i've never had any audio out of sync issue's with it.

I use Virtualdub and SB 1024 Live flawlessly, and never had any compatability issues.
I love Vdub and having tried half a dozen others wouldn't be without it.

There's an option to 'lock audio to video'.
When I unchecked this box my audio/video sync issues went away immediately.

  6. I was never able to get Virtualdub to capture it simply gives me a blank screen instead of a streaming picture. I have installed PicVideo codec with no success. Am I missing something ? I was able to capture with most other known softwares. Any suggestions ?

Whilst it's the same topic I don't really want to hijack teh post and pull direction away from the original thread.
Suffice to say you need to provide a little more information such as compression settings, capture settings etc and then create a new thread Will
