can anyone tell me why i can burn a movie from a dvd to a dvd-r disc and it works but when i burn it to a dvd+r it doesn't work in the dvd player.

Even though they look the same, they are two different formats.
Your DVD player is the problem - but you are not alone.
Do a search here or on google for DVD-R / DVD+R differences.
Think of it as VHS vs Beta, or Ford vs GM, Coke vs Pepsi etc. -
There are many possibilties... the two most likely are:
1. Your DVD player just happens to 'like' -r media better.
2. The name brand of the -r media you used is compatible w/ your player, and the brand of +r isn't.
In any case, your DVD lplayer determines the playability of a properly authored disc, not the format of the media (+ or -)
