I have burned about 60 backup movies using both CloneDvd and DvdCopy (Intervideo). I used 2 brands of 4x discs, Verbatim and Ritek. Every single disc plays perfectly in my Pioneer DVD 105 Rom and my Plextor PX708A. When I play them in my RP56 standalone I get about a 60% perfect playback and 40% are jerky and the RP56 seems to be really straining to read the discs. This 60\40 rate applies to both brand discs. The RP56 is suppose to be compatible with DVD+R so why would it read 60% great and fail on the other 40%? Sounds like the RP56 might be going bad? It will play store bought movies perfectly though. I am really puzzled and would like some input from some of the experts on this forum if you wouldn't mind. Thank you for your help and reply.

    golfnut,

Just a suggestion, try burning one of the Verbies or Riteks at 2.4x and see how it performs. Another thing to try is using one of the suspect discs in a brand new player.

I have seen this behaviour ( not on your particular player though) previously on 4x burns and there is no hard and fast rule, as you say.

Are you possibly burning at 8x with the Plex to the 4x media? While this is probably fine in the very newest of players it could be the Panny just slightly falls short of the ability to read 8x burns even on good media.

Let us know how you get on.

Studebarc thank you for the reply. I will try the 2.4 as suggested but still do not understand why the RP56 will play some of the discs perfectly fine and not others, same power, brand, etc. I am new to this recording thing and do not really know if I am burning at 8x or 4x, how do I determine this? I tried playing about 15 of the problem discs on my son's Phillips DVD standalone player and every single disc played perfectly. Sounds like an RP56 problem I think. Please let me know how to check the burning speed on my plex. Thank you for your help.

    Golfnut,

As I don't have a Plex it's a little difficult to tell how it behaves. The easiest thing I can suggest is timing how long to "cook" (burn) the disc. The standard sort of rates are approximately:
    @ 2.4x - approx 24 minutes
    @ 4x - approx 15 minutes
    @ 8x (z-clv) - approx 8 minutes

The other critical factor is the burning application you are using. You don't mention this in your posts. Doubtless if you watched the application while burning it may give you clues as to data burning rate. Nero should offer you options to set the burn rate in the "burn" tab area.

More info on this from you may well help.

    Regards

Sorry, just saw you are using AnyDVD to burn from Clone etc. I am unfamiliar with this application. Nero 6 and RNM 4.5 are currently the burn apps which I make most use of.

    Well ...

PANASONIC is in the -R camp including -R -RW and RAM
So why in the world would you expect it to PERFECTLY play back anything that is +

    Like DUH

Switch to -R media which your DVD Burner should NOT have problems with.

    Fulcilives,

Your reasoning may well seem solid to you, but it's borne out of ignorance.

Yes, Panasonic is in the -R camp.

What you may or may not realise is that apart from very small differences in navigational systems for burning, the end Data, being DVD-Video is IDENTICAL on both +R and -R. If you read Golfnut's post it is an iconsistency of result in the player rather than any sinister issue with +R. All the +R discs play with varying degrees of success, the variables are what we are trying to limit.

The problems pointed out by Golfnut are echoed by many with varying success on different +R or -R media brands, different Burner units and different software...that's all. Currently here the greater questions for DVD burning are media/burner/software/player relationships and resolving that....no +R Versus -R issue at all.

Yeah well tell that garbage to my PIONEER or my CYBERHOME

Neither of those will play DVD+R discs but they have no problem with DVD-R discs.

True some players have no trouble with DVD+R but it has been documented in the past that not all players like DVD+R and it has been pointed out before that PANASONIC is one of those brands that CAN BE iffy with DVD+R discs.

So get a life before commenting on crapola you don't know

    P.S.
My CYBERHOME will SOMETIMES play DVD-R made on a PANSONIC stand alone DVD recorder. It is well documented that the stand alone PANNY DVD RECORDS do not author the final disc 100% compliant. So MOST of the time my CYBERHOME will have trouble (the only time it has trouble with -R discs) but sometimes ... it will play back DVD-R discs made in a Panny stand alone. The point is ... go with DVD-R discs and your PANASONIC will be fine hehehe
