  1. I just downloaded dvd shrink, as you probably know it will only accept .ifo files. Someone told me I can use ULEAD movie factory to switch mpg to .ifo. The question is how..... I see no option for this can anyone help me.

I'm trying to compress a mpg movie file to fit on a 4.7 dvd. Its about 5.5 over the disk size. I encoded the disk with tmpgnc and I want to use tmpgnc dvd author to write to the dvd. What are the correct steps if anyone knows, or what am I missing.

    Thanks \

I think you have been misinformed (or you misunderstood) so far.

You have 2 choices that I can see:

1.) re-encode the video file to a smaller size (lower bitrate, alternate audio type if it's lpcm, lower resolution)
2.) author the DVD files at the large size and then use a transcoder - DVDshrink or other, to reduce to fit DVDr

  3. Right there is where my problem is....

If I lower the bitrate how do I know when low is to low. Also isnt the a software where you can simply load the file then shorten it or tell it how much disk space to use.

That is the program (software) - a transcoder. Look at various ones in the TOOLs section.

    transcoders: https://www.videohelp.com/tools#DVDtoDVD

If you want to try option #1 - there is a bitrate calculator right on this site. :c) https://www.videohelp.com/tools#VideoBitrateCalculators

You enter the time (length of video) and it helps calulate what bitrate to set.

added - a third option is to create (2) DVDs if you want to use the video as is.

Even though DVDr disks read "4.7" it is actually less. My authroing software says max is 4.4, but others say 4.3

  5. well I have the transcoder I mentioned I had dvd shrink. It olny works with .ifo files, so my problem is how to get a mpg file to a .ifo file. So it will work in dvd shrink.

    That's this way:

2.) author the DVD files at the large size and then use a transcoder - DVDshrink or other, to reduce to fit DVDr

You cannot turn an mpg into an ifo file. Ifo is only a tiny InFOrmation file. A part of the whole authored DVD.

Go ahead and make your DVD - to your Harddrive - not disc. Then use DVDShrink on the IFO that is created.

If you go for it. Let me/us know how you make out.
