  1. I'm kinda new to the whole DVD burning thing, and i'm thinking of buying one. Do you guys have any suggestions on what would be the best thing to get. I'll be mostly using it to back up my personal dvds and im wanting a dual format burner. So what would be the best brand to get? Thanks

You are likely to just get names & models thrown at you without knowing your budget, your preferences, or your current setup.

Best place to start is the WRITERS section on the left. Owners who are either pleased or displeased enough to bother to make comments will leave useful info there.

If you spot a few that look good, do a search for those (one at a time) right on the search box top-right of this page, to see what additional comments there may be about them.

Still have questions after that? Narrow your choices by asking specific questions about the few you're deciding between.

    Good luck. :c)

If its in a store and un-opened buy it try it, if it don't work take it back and get something else. After all isn't this what most consumers do?

The Sony or the Pioneer would be your best bet. I've seen the Pioneer OEM for about $150 on newegg.com. But you may want to spend the extra few dollars at check out to upgrade its warranty to a year from the standard 90 days.

I have 7 oem Pioneer 106Ds,they all came with a 1 YEAR warranty. You might get 90 days on a refurb, but "new" drives are 1 year.

Interesting, cause during the 104/105 days the OEM bare drives only came with 90 days, this was verified by Pioneer themselves. Perhaps its changed. Either way newegg is an easy company to deal with. So expect their exteneded warrantys are a decent bargain, but I've never used one myself.
