I was thinking of getting the R200 to start printing out lables onto my dvds, and also making lables for the cases. But I'm just curious about how much the cost of ink would factor into this. Can anyone give an average cost per dvd/case? Keep in mind I'd prolly be using the full dvd cases and not cd jewel cases.

  2. Printed about 70+ disk so far. About1/4 full ink coverage. Rest just parts. Here are the current ink levels from doing this....

Ink is about 12 to 14 US dollars per color. Would recomend NOT to use generic since I have seen too many machines get trashed by non company carts.

  3. Oh isn't that cute...it has a "Buy Ink" button at the bottom of that dialog. That would take you to Epson's web site, no doubt.

I have a cheapo Canon printer ($50) for the slip covers. The ink is cheaper (about $23 for all tanks), since I bought the R200 specifically for disc printing, which was cheaper than my 1 line monochrome Casio CW-50

  5. Same here. Use a C60 for cover and the R200 for disk.

Can you just buy bulk ink and reuse the cartridges? That is how I use my Canon BJC-240.
    Hello.

  7. I love the service call I go on for people saying their printer is doing strange thing all of a sudden. 99% of the time they just tried or on their 2nd set of non company ink. By the time you get it settled down and printing you usualy wast a set of carts which adding thing up cost you more along with the price of a service call it not worth it.

Thanks for the replies. Good idea about using a seperate printer to print the covers. I currently have a Canon S520 that I was gonna sell if I got the R200, but looks like I'll keep it for that purpose (although it seems like the Canon uses ink way too fast). It's funny how the R200 is cheaper than buying all the ink tanks for it. Maybe instead of buying the ink I'll just keep buying a new R200 evertime it gets dry, then I can just sell the old printer and pay practically zip for the ink.

do a search on this forum. I found a thread a couple weeks ago during a search where there was tons of discussion of how to save money on ink with the epson printers.

not sure if it was in THIS forum or one of the others on this site, so do a whole site search.

The Epson R200 I have I love! Printed many disks and a few full page glossy flyers, I would have geussed I would have used about half tanks by now, but it shows to be over 3/4 full still for all colors even black.
I only plan to use the R200 for disks, maybe a few special jobs. Covers and everything else I will do with my canon or other printers.
I compared my 3 color canon I850 to the 6 color Epson R200 with some glossy photo flyers. I could not see any real difference myself, both were great but I think the canon was faster, and why mess with 6 colors for the same quality the canon does with just 3 colors. Both are photo quality and look really great!
So I will use the Epson for the disks only mostly, which my Canon cannot do

Learn to refill properly and use HIGH QUALITY INKs! There is basically never a reason to replace the carts for most decent printers!!

    Use the correct inks!
My I850 Canon uses a pigment ink, the Espons I beleave are the DYE inks.

That said, I generally buy an extra set of carts for a new printer, I then have one set to use and the other to refill when I feel like it. I never bought the extra's for the I850 though and refilled the same set when they run out or low.

I have 2 Canon I850s I use for nearly everything. Oldest one at home is still using the carts that came with that printer! Refilled about 30 times or so! Just last week I printed 100 flyers on card stock, 300 normal paper. Lots of black text and a color picture of people in the center. I blew out 2 tanks of black, 1 tank each color! My ink costs? Maybe $2.00-$5.00?? I just bought 500ml black, and 250ml yellow a few weeks ago, the most used colors! I still have about half a bottle of both red(magenta) and blue (Cyan) left from the ink I bought about 3-4yrs ago! I do many types of printing like flyers, pinback buttons, theater tickets, pictures, etc....
Refilling most single color tanks are very easy, Canon, epson, Xerox. The harder ones are the HP/Lexmark all in one types!
Print heads are not built onto the single color tanks like epsons and canons use. They are on the HP/Lexmark type all in ones.

High quality inks should cost you very little compared to the carts, but more than the garbage inks you get at wal-marts or some refilled/generic carts. Depending how much ink you want to buy at one time, maybe figure $15 per color X 6 plus black. A few syringes for injecting the ink, and a hot glue gun to seal the hole you make for the syringe. About $120 or less and you should NEVER run out of ink doing normal volume printing.
Also for the Epsons, some you need a chip resetter when refilling to make the tanks read full again, so add $25 for that. Once you have everything the first time, you only need buy more inks when/if you start runing low.
Bulk INK is the only way to go! Easy to refill and cheap compared to carts! My ink costs last year and this year was 0 untill 2 weeks ago, then I ordered 500ml and 250ml inks for about $50 total, my ink cost for the rest of this year will probably be 0 unless I buy a different type ink for other printers.
If I could get the paper costs so low I would be happy too. Think about it!!
I spend more for PAPER than I do for the ink
