Do we have any forum members from poorer countries outside the US and Europe, like Ethiopia, China, Africa, Haiti, Cuba, North Korea, Pakistan, or Iraq? That would be interesting if we had a member from Iraq. Maybe we have one or two.

I know we have members from many different countries, but I think it would be interesting to know if we have members in countries such as haiti, North Korea, or even Afgahnistan.

  6. And before you admit you're from one of 'those' countries, better give us your IP address so we can traceroute you and make sure you ain't pullin' our legs.

I know of at least one alien. Swindon my ass, Craig Tucker is from Kashyyyk. Just look at his passport photo and tell me I'm wrong.

Finding a North Korean IP address. Now wouldn't that be a fun game indeed. And Inmarsat gateways don't count!

I'm not really into politically correct.

All of the countries listed have internet, including Haiti. Maybe only .00001% of the population (the elite) have it, but it was worth a try.

I do believe every "country" in the world has some internet access.

Even in the most undeveloped of the back countries, many organizations are asking for donations to provide both pedal powered generator-battery setups, and solar power collectors to allow some truly undeveloped peoples to connect to the outside world.

Look them up. Might be a good place to retire your "antiquated" 700 mhz systems and the like.

I think it unlikely many of them will be able to afford the stuff you guys are using, 250 buck cap cards, DVD burners, 2.50 DVD-Rs, because you get what you pay for, 3 gig P4s, etc.

So, we might not see many of them here.

But, y'know, the internet is not the sole province of the US-UK-EU.

Whoa. I can still edit Full Quality DV on my 450mhz in Real Time without dropping frames. No need to retire it just yet.

Mystic beat me to it, on the Mac.

And it's not slamming anyone using an older machine.
Not everyone wants or needs next gen, but those who do have a few gathering dust somewhere.

This would be better than scrapping them.

you think that's impressive on a 450mhz mac? try it on an 800mhz Via C3! the crippled fpu on these chips make them perform poorer than a 400mhz celery chip. still does it.

oldest machine in the house, 266mhz being our hardware firewall and internet sharing machine. runs 24/7 with no hard drive! the newest oldest machine is actually a P133, to become an audio server!

sorry, they'll have to wait a few years yet for my atiquated technology!

    Flan,

I think they'd be happy to have it a few years.

Hey, how many guys here have mentioned still playing with Commodores and Zeniths and the like,

I said rather than scrap one, not to give away something you still have some use for.

My oldest daughter wants me to put one of the Cyrix machines back in service for her to use as an internet firewall/server for her 4 machine network so the kids can get on without her machine being on 24/7.

I've got 'em still working from 486 DX4 100 up. Some of those oldies even boot up faster than my 2000 and 2400XPs do.

And with all the now worthless SIMMs I have, have to run a few of those machines.
