Hi all.
To cut a long story short, this undocumented feature discovered by Sbofen enables you to use different compression levels for different parts of a title.
Done in "Re-author" mode, it doesn't require the use of multiple instances, hence a seamless playback.![]()
The simplest application could be to use "Still Pictures" on the end-credits.
One of the most powerful could be to selectively apply less compression to demanding parts of a movie (action scenes, scenes with smoke, water...).
The possibilities are mind-bogling!![]()
For more info, read this thread:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59039
For a brand new guide:
http://www.dvdshrink.info/mixed-compressions.php
It is not yet linked to DVDShrink.info (hence the bland and empty page), but will be soon.
That dvdshrink never mentionned this feature is as amazing as the feature itself!![]()

Yes it is great!!!! Better than cutting and combining different parts of a movie, and having the pause in between while it switches VOBs.
-
Thanks for the reply, digitalmaster.
Please let us know of any experimenting you do with this method. -
I'm doing an X-rated movie tomorrow.
No smoke, no water but its full of action.
How do I set the compression for different scenes? You stop me again whilst I'm walking and I'll cut your fv<king Jacob's off. -

ok that's pretty cool I have to admit. Although when I do throw the same title multiple times and trim at various points my dvd players hiccups for less than a second so it's no biggie to me. This might be more complicated (definitely not if you do it once or twice then a no-brainer) but for some they're standalone dvd players might no be so seamless.
-
Hey tompika, I can't believe you're asking me that when I already posted a link to the guide.
That's not like you.
http://www.dvdshrink.info/mixed-compressions.php
Choose "Automatic" to start with, as it will give you an indication of how much compresion would normally be required.
Then select each scene using "Start/End", and use "Ratio" to change its compression level to what you believe will be an acceptable level for each (as described in the guide).
@ housepig,
What is the guy in your avatar doing to the invisible man?? -

Sorry if I sound patronizing, but you're aware that this method doesn't require multiple instances, right?
"This might be more complicated... but for some their standalone dvd players might no be so seamless."
It is always possible, but I find it very doubtful as only one titleset is created (as opposed to several when using the multiple-instances trick). -

I'm gonna post some screenshots so you can tell me if that scene requires less compression.

I guess I was fished-in.

yeah it is a good feature of DVDShrink. Is it mentioned in the guide you can also crop the audio from the end credits? I can't see when I checked it a while back but any space saved is a blessing
again. top work ddlooping and your guide is excellent as usual, keep up the good work
I think this feature has future potential as maybe DVDShrink can give an option to insert blank frames so you could use those instead of stills
p.s. @ tompika, I do hope you see the funny side of my comment as it's nothing to do with you personally or your intelligence -

Macka, were you fished-in by tompika too?
Also:
"Is it mentioned in the guide you can also crop the audio from the end credits? I can't see when I checked it a while back but any space saved is a blessing".
I didn't mention it as I still don't see the point of keeping the end-credits while removing their soundtrack. One might as well remove them entirely. :P
If you can convince me I'll add it to the guide.
"again, top work ddlooping and your guide is excellent as usual, keep up the good work"
Thanks Macka, I appreciate it. -

it's just a suggestion and anyway I haven't looked into it fully yet and checked the IFO's so maybe it's best to give it a miss for now as it may not even work any better than a cropped movie being inserted
maybe some people like reading the credits but hate the music, though they could just press MUTE I suppose
I just know it's possible to remove the audio also using this selective method
if it wasn't for you I wouldn't have discovered how easy Wink is to use so thanks again for that -
Can the audio be removed from any portion of the title, or only from the end-credits (only using DVD Shrink and this method)?

Ok then, I won't add the audio trick to the guide.

I'd rather keep my VOB/Cell DVD structure the same as the original than snip bits out
so I've got to modify my WINK guide now I suppose -
I'm quite surprised not to see more interest in this.
Do you think it is still too complicated for most (and I mean the method)?
Or is it not such a great feature after all (I personally think it is)? -

I think the people who know about the different compression ratio setting in DVDShrink really appreciate it, old and new. If only others could realise how easy it is to do then maybe more would take it up
It's a shame it's not available in full copy mode but maybe DVDShrink can change that, who knows
it would be great idea if you could use the same method to insert blank frames instead of still pictures to save even more space but still maintain DVD structure
I have a few ideas on how it could be done but I dont know how to program
still no word from DVDShrink yet either, give him another nudge for me -

One point, regarding the variable compression setting.
I made a mistake, selected chapters 1 ~ 28 of a movie at automatic compression and Chapter 29 (the end credits) as 50%. Having done that, I forgot to AGAIN mark chapters 1 ~ 29, which would bring both compression settings as greyed, so when the program ran, it only gave me the end credits.
Perhaps the guide could be a bit more clear on this, to become idiot-proof for guys like me.The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know. -
Thanks for the feedback, SaSi.
I might change the message background to make it stand out.
Macka, I wish I could give dvdshrink a nudge as easily as that.
He hasn't replied to my last 2 emails either.
But I don't mind at all, as I know he's busy. -
I changed the message and its background.
I used black so as not to introduce a color that wouldn't be in the palette, but I'll check if there's one that might be part of the palette and look better.
P.S: I have now changed it to a more appropriate dark red. -
Wow, I wish I had said something about this earlier, I started doing this about 2 weeks ago, but I was a bit presumptuous in thinking that this was already thought of. Great job bringing this to everyone attention!
Regards,
Alan -
"I wish I had said something about this earlier"
Next time you discover something as cool as that, please do not presume anything.
"Great job bringing this to everyone attention!"
Thanks Alan.
P.S: credit must go to Sbofen from the Doom9 forums though,
as he was the one who actually reported this undocumented feature. -
@ ddlooping , thx m8 4 the clear guide. tried it only with the end-credits. good job. take care and go on.
-
Thank you both for the positive feedback.
