Hey all
I have a dvd i just bought and I want to back it up. thing is it has about 2 gigs of useless extras (mostly trailers and other stuff), but i want to keep the menu structure, play scene selection etc, and also keep the ability to use scene selections.
so i back up just the movie and the first part of .vob's which are the menu/sceneselection etc its 4.4 gigs so great! i can burn and play.
BUT this doesnt play in dvd player app, i knew this already, and i understand i have to edit the ifo/.bup with ifo edit, but what in the heck to i actually do!?
i open the app and all i get is create IFOs and some other stuff which is great for making ifo's if you have a progression of .vob files. sure i can do that.
but editing ifos to not care about all the extra .vobs i left out is where im clueless
any help is appreciated.
here's what is in the folder i backed up:
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.VOB
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_02_2.VOB
VTS_02_3.VOB
VTS_02_4.VOB
VTS_02_5.VOB

Can anyone help ?
I'm trying to do a similar thing. I want to get rid of a bunch of trailers that run before the DVD hits the menu. Problem is, the trailers are in seperate VTS files and if I get rid of the VTS set I just get a navigation error, presumably because the player is looking for something that is not there.
I guess I need to not only remove the VTS set but also tell the navigation menu to jump to a particular TS and VobID.
How the heck do you do that ?! -
there has got to be someone here who knows how to do this?!
anyone?
i know i have to do something to the .ifo but what exactly needs to be done?!?
i dropped about 50 of the .vob's that were just useless info, trailers and such and kept just the movie .vob's and the menu .vob's
it wont play by it self, because i assume the VIDEO_TS.ifo needs to be corrected
please help -
Maybe this guide could help you:
http://www.mpegit.net/eng_ifoedit.php 8) -
There are three ways that you can do what you want:
1. Follow these guides:
Complete manual way. IF you follow them correctly, you will get what you want. Completely Free. But a steep learning curve.
http://www.deano.dsl.pipex.com/backup/index.htm
Or, alternatively, 2COOL's guides in Doom9. Site is down at the mo, but search there for Guides - 2COOL
2. Use Menuedit. You can strip unwanted parts. Will probaly work on your player, depending how fussy it is.
Slight learning curve
http://menuedit.dimad.net/home.html
Free (a little) limited version, registered full version 16,50$.
3. Use DVDStripper. Get everything you don't want off the DVD, the easy way, leaving it 100% compatible.
You just select what u don't want, and click a button. That's it.
Payware only, no demo.
http://www.deano.dsl.pipex.com/tool.htm
You can also find them (Menuedit and DVDStripper) in the tool list, in this site. -
thanks guys, i knew it could be done
ill check these out and get back with you all if i have further questions -

the problem is the movie is the 02_xx_.vob and ifo's and it did nothing to them. Thinking i could just add them to the folder and have it work is obviously a mistake because it only plays up to the end of the menu, none of the menu buttons say play for example play the movie.
Scene selection works, but it only bring you to the scene selectino menu, if you actually choose a scene nothing happens.
am i going in the right direction? -
@galactica:
Could you please give the file list? Something like this:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_0.VOB
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_02_2.VOB
VTS_02_3.VOB
VTS_02_4.VOB
VTS_02_5.VOB
VTS_02_6.VOB
VTS_03_0.BUP
VTS_03_0.IFO
VTS_03_0.VOB
VTS_03_1.VOB -
As is ripped directly to my HD:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.VOB
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_02_2.VOB
VTS_02_3.VOB
VTS_02_4.VOB
VTS_02_5.VOB
VTS_03_0.BUP
VTS_03_0.IFO
VTS_03_0.VOB
VTS_03_1.VOB
VTS_04_0.IFO
VTS_04_0.BUP
VTS_04_0.VOB
VTS_04_1.VOB
VTS_05_0.BUP
VTS_05_0.IFO
VTS_05_0.VOB
VTS_05_1.VOB
(AND SO ON AND SO FORTH, UNTIL YOU GET TO)
VTS_51_0.IFO
VTS_51_0.BUP
VTS_51_0.VOB
VTS_51_1.VOB
No joke, 211 items total. Bold is the stuff i want to keep, rest I want to ditch. the total of the bolded items is 4.3 gigs. I understand that the ifo's (VIDEO_TS or the VTS not sure which one) sets the character for the dvd to know how many total files are needed. So if i delete all the ones from VTS_03_0.BUP to VTS_51_1.VOB all i have is the menu .vob, the movie .vobs and the ifo/.bup files.
i want to make it so all i have is the movie but still have the menu work for scene selection.
does this help?
edit:
after looking closer at the page you posted it says
With the help of this is a much requested guide you are able to save the extras and menu(s) on the dvd. The menu is relatively easy to capture because it doesn't take much room on the disc. This guide concentrates on capturing the menu, but with little adaptation you can use it to get the extras too.
anything special needed to get both menu and movie together, and have them play as a recognizable dvd in a dvd player app or in a standalone and still have the menu work?!? (ie, play button and scene selections that work!) -
It appears that the main movie is in the VTS_02 set. Not a problem since you're keep the entire VTS_01 set (if not, reply and I have a workaround for this case.) Anyway. make sure that you have a copy of all VTS_xx_0.BUP, VTS_xx_0.IFO and VTS_xx_0.VOB (for xx = 03, 04, etc.).
If you wish to make your backup region free and remove user prohibitions then open the VIDEO_TS.IFO in Ifoedit and hit the "Make Region Free" (or something similar) button near the bottom. Then save (VIDEO_TS.IFO). Next, hit the "Remove User Prohibitions" (I think RUP or something like that) near the bottom. Then save (VIDEO_TS.IFO).
Next Open VTS_01_0.IFO and hit "GET VTS Sectors" Button. Hit OK to overwrite.
You should now be ready to burn your DVD. I use Nero, (DVD-video option) which sometimes complain. Ignore. But a word to the wise, burn it to DVDRW first and check it out.
The above approach works for me (most of the time). Good Luck. -
ok, one thing im lost on, I do this to the entire backed up folder?
the 7.09 gig one? or do i pull the files I want to keep out and then do this?
just a little confused as to how this is going to make it so that i dont have all the hundreds of VTS_xx_xx.vob that are in sets after 02.
am i missing some fundamental aspect to IFOEDIT? it seems that this instructions just makes the entire 7.09 folder region free (which it already is)
all i want to do is get rid of all the stuff past VTS_02_05.vob and keep everythign above it. If i just move them out, they dont play in my dvd player nor my dvd player apps.
i apologize for my igonorance, just got a PC in addition to my Macs, so I wanted to see what this PC could do and I am totally lost! It would be like you all coming to mac and being totally lost.
thanks for your help. -
So if I understand right you dont need to compress anything? You just want that bold stuf in one DVDR?
Just Copy&Paste those wanted (read below too) files to new folder and then open the main movie IFO with IfoEdit and hit GET VTS sectors. That should work. Try RW media first.
There is more menu objects than just VTS_01_0.VOB so you will need all those
VTS_0X_0.BUP
VTS_0X_0.IFO
VTS_0X_0.VOB
But thats no problem because those wont take much space (usually). You dont need
VTS_03_1.VOB-VTS_51_1.VOB files!
So Copy&Paste these files to NEW folder and hit GET VTS Sectors:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB (<- check what that is, if its not important then delete it)
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.VOB
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_02_2.VOB
VTS_02_3.VOB
VTS_02_4.VOB
VTS_02_5.VOB
VTS_03_0.BUP
VTS_03_0.IFO
VTS_03_0.VOB
VTS_04_0.IFO
VTS_04_0.BUP
VTS_04_0.VOB
VTS_05_0.BUP
VTS_05_0.IFO
VTS_05_0.VOB
(AND SO ON AND SO FORTH, UNTIL YOU GET TO)
VTS_51_0.IFO
VTS_51_0.BUP
VTS_51_0.VOB
If those require more space than 4.38 then you may have to compress... You could also check what those VTS_x_1.VOBs contain so you dont forget anything important :P -
Just Copy&Paste those wanted (read below too) files to new folder and then open the main movie IFO with IfoEdit and hit GET VTS sectors. That should work. Try RW media first.
it also asked if i wanted to save associated .bup files also? I said yes. any concerns with this?
didnt get any crazy errors or anything with the app so I assume I just click save?
But now its saying save as VTS_02.ifo is that correct?
shouldn't it save as VIDEO_TS.ifo since thats what I opened.
Do i do just what im doing, or should I have gone about this with another .ifo
the three to choose are now only VIDEO_TS.ifo VTS_01.ifo and VTS_02.ifo -
ok did this. I hope this was to be done on VIDEO_TS.ifo, is that the main one?
It's the VTS_02_0.IFO!!!! 8) -
HA
so did i screw up anything?!?
I just went though and did GET VTS SECTORS on VTS_02_0.ifo and not thats its done when i quit it says QUIT WITHOUT SAVING? so I said no, and save says save as VTS_51_0.ifo
do i say yes, or rename it to VTS_02_0.ifo
i await your reply before i do anything. -
Do the whole Copy&paste thing again 8)
Then just open the VTS_02_0.IFO and hit GET VTS SECTORS. Then it will prompt a warning message -> hit OK everytime when it ask it. After that you dont actually have to save anything.... it has already overwrite those files... Then burn those files to DVDRW and test it with you DVD-player.
The software players may fail if you play the VOBs etc from the HD. -
cool, thanks for the speedy replies.
i will give this a try.
ill let you know what my dvd player does with this disk as soon as its done burning it.
again, many thanks. -
I'm not sure if you could do the same thing with VIDEO_TS.ifo... I always do it with main movie IFO...
-
im inclined to say you can, the process was the same, it asked me the same questions and wrote the same data in the top window.
anyway, my DVDrw's are only 1x so in about 40 min ill beable to tell you.
your right, in my software player it does open, but its just black screen. progress because before it wouldnt even open.
hopefully my dvd player likes this disk better than the software dvd player. -
Yep, worked like a charm!
thanks for all your help. I knew that since the sum of these was less than 4.4 gigs it had to be something very simple. what was throwing me was i had to include all the .ifo/.bup and vts_xx_0's of all the stuff i didnt want. I just assumed you got rid of it all and IFOEDIT would correct it so that the new VIDEO_TS fodler would have correct IFO's that would not be looking for all 51 of the ifos.
thanks again, i really appreciate your quick replies. -
So it works with no problem, but i do have one question
if i pull an individual .vob to Video Lan Client they open and play
thing is, I open the menu .vob and on my comptuer its widescreen 16X9 but when my dvd player plays it its full screen.
the movie is widescreen but just the menu is not. is it supposed to do this? -
The IfoEdit sometimes change the menu attributes from the IFO-file/files. Open that VTS_01_0.IFO (that should be the main menu IFO?) and look at the Menu attributes. If those settings are wrong then double click the line and change the right values.
