It is supposed to have even better picture quality than DVD movies, with close to HDTV picture quality? Does anyone have more info on D-VHS format or has anyone seen it?

Well, I don't know much about D-VHS, but it really sound like it's pointing
in the same basic direction as DV.. which is basically "digital" ..so quality
would be there in any event, and comparing this to DVD is, imo, null/void

  4. Like v-help said, whats the point even if d-vhs is so good its comparable to dv tapes, they're still bulky.

I mean, look at this giant:

  6. A long time ago (about two years ago) we had an EchoStar DBS unit with one of them fancy D-VHS units built-in. Returned it the next day when I found out Playboy TV wasn't on Dish!

    Just kidding.

Actually, I returned the unit. But not because I was disappointed with the D-VHS system. We got a PVR unit instead. Didn't use the D-VHS enough to know much about it, but the picture quality was A-OK.

Hold on a sec, D-VHS equivalent to DV? In standard mode sure, but in high quality mode with a hi def source you are talking about an absolutely massive difference in quality.

DV is limited to 720x480/576. D-VHS supports up to 1920x1080. That's six times more resolution! D-VHS is technically superior by a landslide because it supports Hi Def. There currently isn't any other format which can boast this ability. D-VHS is still currently the best way to record HDTV broadcasts, and those can look a hell of a lot better than any DVD on the market.

Don't get me wrong though, D-VHS is a dead duck. Nobody wants tapes anymore. They are bulky and get warped too easily. When a digital equivalent to D-VHS comes out then that will be the format of choice. Until then, D-VHS has a limited life as a niche market for those who must have the absolute highest quality regardless of how impractical it is.
