noobie Q. How to play DVD on CD player?
I genuflect to your knowledge and respectfully ask:
I have a cd player on my laptop and PC and would like to play DVDs on them. I've been told that I need the codecs and a software program to do so. What do you experts suggests?
Thanks for the help, in advance.

This CAN NOT be done. You need a DVD-ROM drive to play/read DVD media. CDs and DVDs might look the same but they are totally different technologies and use completely different lasers, formatting, etc.
However, all DVD-ROM drives can also read CDs. -
You beat me to it... which is just as well, since I was completely prepared to give a smart-ass answer.

No can do. Different laser wavelengths.
Buy a DVD ROM drive.ICBM target coordinates:

This is true if the drive has dual lasers.Originally Posted by Vejita-sama

Or better yet, buy a DVD Burner and join in the fun!
Just what is this reality thing anyway? -

Well...you can create a "back-up" of your DVD's to CD by creating a video CD (VCD) or Super-Video CD (SVCD). You would be able to play these on your computer's CD drive and on many home DVD players. Look in the "Articles" section for some good beginner information.Originally Posted by winstonsmith6076"Art is making something out of nothing and selling it." - Frank Zappa

Whoever told you that is either lying in your face or doesn't know enough information.I've been told that I need the codecs and a software program to do so. What do you experts suggests?
In case your are wondering, NO you cannot turn your CDRW into a DVDRW by downloading a firmware for it. -
Seems to me your best bet is if you have a PC with a DVD-Rom to backup the DVDs to a format readable by a cd-rom. Plenty of guides on this site to tell ya how to do that...

If your programs are mostly shorts/trailers/spots, you could have a DVD "backed up" to a miniDVD (aka cDVD aka DVDonCD), but even this would require somebody to have a DVD-ROM drive to do the original backing-up. Also, you would probably need to recompress so as to have a lower bitrate to be within reasonable CD spin limits, and this will lower your quality somewhat.
Time to take the plunge, huh?
