Ok, heres the thing. I have an Artec dvd-rom and it only rips dvd's at 3.4x maximum...for me this is way too slow. I am thinking of buying the lite on 166, but I won't if someone knows of a way to unlock this damn thing so that it will rip a bit faster. Hacked firmware or *something*!

The thing is this question is asked 4-5x/wk so most people 'no longer answer it'. If you do a forum search (because I am not familiar with your specific drive) you'll find that short of buying a new DVD-ROM there really isn't that much you can do, sorry.
Newegg has the lite-on drive for ~$30 thou. -
what speed is the thing suppose to read at? I have a Lite-on 163 which reads at 16x. its only been doing about 2.5x so I had to uninstall the IDE controllers and reboot to redetect them. XP likes to switch you to PIO mode without alerting you evidently and you have to do the IDE proceedure to force it to try DMA mode again. I think it covered in depth in a sticky on the Computer hardware forum.

its already set in dma mode...i was hoping someone knew how to get 'new' firmware for it that could unlock it's ripping speed. it is a 16x drive though...

thats odd. so far as I know you shouldn't need to Unlock anything. mine was ripping fine at high speed, usually anywhere from 9x-13x until my little PIO issue. a DVD-9 would rip in about 10 minutes. I was using DVD Decryptor by the way. it shows the actual ripping speed so its good to test with.

well, i found the firmware flashing page and dl'd the firmware that's supposed to unlock it, but from what I understand the drive only rips at 5x...I don't know if its worth all the effort of basically dismantling my computer just to flash firmware...its the artec g48

Get a TOSHIBA 1712 and flash it with hijackers no limit firmware. Check out his site:

ok, flashed the 2.4 firmware with the 2.91....no more than 5x on a dvd-9 on ripping speed...i don't think this drive is worth owning...dma is enabled, so I guess the drive just sux.
