  1. Right, I've authored a few dvds-no probs. Now for the first time, I want to copy one I've already done using Nero 5.5.10.35. But Nero tells me that the blank disc (blank dvd+r) has insufficient capacity. Now my original disc is only 4.2GB so whats happening?

  2. This has been covered several times in the forums - basically Nero's projects "grow" if you do a straight disc copy.

    Either:

Use the recorder to read the original disc as well as write the new one, caching to the hard disk inbetween, or

Put the original into your DVD-ROM drive, and create a new project as usual, dragging the files from the DVD-ROM drive to the compilation and burning disc to disc that way instead.

Either way is good to go.

  3. Sorry if this has been asked before-I obviously wasn't using the correct search strings. Are you saying put the disc in my cdrom drive and drag the files to my burner in "compile a new dvd" mode? If I do that it says the video is non dvd compliant, do you want to proceed. Is it ok to say yes?
    Thanks

no .... drag the files onto your hdd and then burn with nero as a new dvd disk. an easier way is to use dvd decrypter in iso mode ... use iso read to copy the files to your hdd and then switch to iso write to burn them to a blank dvdr(w) ... doing a direct disc to disc copy is not really recommended you should always copy to the hdd first as this allows for any read errors to be corrected copying disc to disc causes problems as if the source disk is misread then you will have errors on the destination disc

  5. What do you mean "no" ? You can do exactly that !

Only putting a DVD in a CD-ROM as per the earlier post won't work for obvious reasons.

If you want to do a straight copy in Nero you do not need to copy the files onto the hard disc first, you can go from the source DVD-R just as easily as if it was on a hard disk - you're just making life difficult and adding about 15 minutes to the process doing it that way.

Bearing in mind most DVD-ROM drives are quite a bit faster than the writers, read errors shouldn't be a problem. I use this method exclusively and without fail.

If you create a new DVD Video project in Nero and put the files from the VIDEO_TS folder into its namesake in the new project window, it will be fine.

If the original disc is non compliant then so will the copy, obviously. What sort of errors are you getting ? If it's BUP files not matcing the IFO file, then just copy the IFO file to the same directory and rename it as a BUP file. Mega botch, but if the author if the "original" couldn't be arsed to do it properly, nothing you do to it in that sense is going to make it any worse !

  6. Thanks for that. I dragged from the cdrom as suggested. No probs
Just out of interest, whats the deal with the non compliant issue. Discs play alright for me, so what are they non compliant with? Does it mean they may not play on some older players and or cdroms? Just womdering!

  7. Right, first of all, why do you keep mentioning CD ROM's ?

A DVD WILL NEVER PLAY IN A CD-ROM DRIVE - PERIOD.

Don't get your CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives confused - they may look similar and operate in a similar fashion, but a DVD can not be read in a CD player / ROM drive. DVD-ROM drives CAN read CD's, but that's your lot as far as compatibility goes.

As far as compliancy goes, there are a number of issues most of which you can bend, but buggering about with the standard is asking for troubles if you're looking for maximum compatibility. A good checker should look for things like:

Missing / invalid references to VOB files
Missing / invalid references to missing streams in IFO files
    Incorrect file naming convention
    Incorrect screen resolution
    Incorrect sample rate for audio
Multiple aspect ratios within one VOB file
Wrong disc layout (eg missing out "required" folders like AUDIO_TS)
Wrong UDF / ISO bridging structures

And one or two other "minor" things that can be deviated from if you don't want to go "by the book".

Things like IFO and BUP files are a good example. You don't need the BackUP files... until something happens to the IFO file meaning the disc is rendered useless as the DVD player doesn't know how to handle the disc. Both the IFO file and BUP files should be identical, but for some reason which I've never been able to fathom, some people manage to bugger this up when producing their discs.

Let me know what complaincy check yours is failing and I'll see if I can shed some light on it for you.

  8. Oops of course I meant dvdrom I think its because I recently replaced my cdrrom drive with a dvd one so that i would have a dvdrom drive+a dvdburner.
I usually author using dvdecrypter+instant copy and haven''t had any probs. However, as I say recently I wanted to copy one of these discs. Using Nero I get a warning about the video failing the dvd video compliancy test and do I want to continue. Saying yes burns the disc which then plays in my pc,in my standalone and in a friends standalone. So I'm not too worried right But I was wondering if I was right in thinking that this occurs because its basically a compressed version of the original and may be missing some files that Nero looks for.
