  1. I finally figured out how to use the damn thing...you wouldn't think it would be as popular as it is when you're que250 and have to wait 4 days to DL ONE thing...

I generally use Klient for IRC.

my problem with any of those progs is I don't want to reconfigure my firewall to deal with incoming files...

And that is the reason I don't use IRC. Well that a few others. You are using a bouncer right?

Yeah, it does get kind of congested now and then. Seems like it always happens when a bunch of "I don't need to read a faq" noobs get in.

Anyone reading this, that is thinking of switching to usenet, one bit of advice.... READ THE DAMN FAQ! Let that be the first things you read. Read several, from several groups. They are most helpful.

DO NOT try using OutlookDistress! I call it that for a reason! Do try Xnews, it is very easy to use for text and binary groups! You can try Agent (if you must), I did and did not like it. The choice is up to you. Do get a third party News service provider, you will read why in the FAQ. If you have a highspeed connection, you most likely have an NNTP (news) server that you pay for with your isp. For anything other than text and small still pictures, they will suck.

And above all else.... DO NOT be a wanker. Wankers will get PLONKED!

Usenet is a rough and tumble world. Not for the faint at heart. Noobs are not tolerated kindly. Not as bad as a noob on IRC, but pretty damn close. Read, Lurk, Leech! There is a lot of good info on usenet. There is also a lot of bad info on usenet, along with massive spam to sift through. Spam is illegal on usenet. It is not meant for ANY commercial use! You will of course see differently. Just about every topic of discussion can be found on usent. From model airplanes to self mutilation of the genitals (a favorite for finding pictures to gross out your friends ). As with any parts of the internet there is illegal activity, but I wouldn't know anything about that, I only go in the legal areas . We can not discuss the illegal stuff here. But I would be happy to discuss the legal parts. Like say comp.periphs.printers , mostly full of people wanting the cheapest quickest to fade ink refills. But once in a great while, someone throws me a bone and asks about archival printing, or wideformat printers. Usenet is what the internet started out as. It is basically like email, but messages are sent to a public place instead of your private mailbox. It does take some learning, just like IRC, but it is not a very steep curve. All OS's can use usenet. There are readers for every OS that I know of. Somewhere I have many links for you MAC people if you need them. And *nix users should have no problems, it started on unix so there should be plenty of tools.

And remember, don't be a wanker!

  8. I used to use mIRC. Due to it's semi-complicated nature and the general attitude towards stupid people/questions it normally keeps the majority of newbies away.

The reason mIRC is so popular is because it has a large selection of high quality files and isn't as prone to legal action as downloading from a p2p network.

The key to not having to wait in a queue of 250 people is to get access to private channels or find smaller networks/channels with a smaller amount of users.

IRC and high quality files? You mean lots of people chatting right? Exchanging ideas, that kind of thing.

Same for FTP, you got to be a player to play. That normally means you have a nice fast upstream connection. But not always.

p2p = AOL for file sharing.

Everything else requires some knowledge, though not much.

WHere's a good place to talk about things like this without the nudge nudge involved?

I have used IRC but I have never used a newsgroup so this may be a stupid question. I went to usenet.com after reading some of the post above to check it out. They charge for access to usnet. I thougth things like newsgroups were sposed to be free?

Usenet and usenet.com are not the same thing.

usenet is a network of newsgroups - kinda like a forum, text based. You use a newsreader program like Xnews, Agent or Outlook (if you're desperate) to access them, through your ISP's news server.

I don't know what usenet.com is, it's probably a web-based portal to finding stuff on Usenet.

it also depends on your ISP - what newsgroups you have access to will depend on what your ISP subscribes to, or blocks - AOL will not let you use a 3rd party newsreader prog (unless they've changed since I left) and they censor the hell out of thier newgroup access.

So basicly my isp has the final say in what i can read on a news group and can censor what they want out. Thats messed up. I have been doing more resarch about this since my last post and found out how to access them. I just always thought of news groups were just news. Didn't know i could read up on so many different subjects.

  13. the free usenet server that comes with your isp,in general it sucks.
to have uncensored and to have complete binaries with a retention of more then a day or two you have to get a premium news server.
if all you want is text, there are servers that are free-$5 month.

usenet.com(aka newsfeeds) is a service that you connect to their servers with a news reader, like agent.i use newsbin.
usenet.com also has a web base for those that perfer it.

Yes, lots of different subjects. A third party server is KEY!

Giganews, Usenetserver, Easynews are 3 big names that offer a premium service. By premium I mean, they lose no messages, and hold on to some of them for up to 30 days. Yes it costs money. Almost everything good costs money on the net. Buck up, it's worth it! Trust me on this, it really is worth getting even the smallest download allotment. You can then use the server with your isp for the main duties, and use the third party server to pick up the missing messages. Check out http://www.newsbinpro.com, it is well worth the price for this software too! You can run newsbinpro for free forever, but you will get a nag message. It was worth the small fee to keep them in developement. They have a forum there to, but I have never gone in to see what it is about.

Again, make sure you read the FAQ's. I don't really want to link the ones that you should read, I think you will figure that out by yourself. And I'm afraid there is not much farther that we can go with this topic here.

I used easynews for a short while, if you in the DFW (dallas) there is a ISP called Internet America tht has a very decent news feed, ifyou get your DSL access through them, but nowhere near the retention of easynews.

    BTW Forte Agent owns all.

    NewsBin pro is all!
