I recently ran into a problem where I could not open a compressed wav file in either Sound Forge or Winamp. I kept getting an error message, 205a in Winamp, just a regular "Unable to open file" in Sound Forge. The Winamp error said: "This file requires MP3 ACM codec to be installed". Well, I took some screen shots (unable to upload here, for some reason, even though they're in .jpg form and below 50KB limit) that show the Lame codec installed on my W2K system, and in the description of the Lame codec itself it clearly states: "Lame ACM MP3 Codec".

Eventually I tried installing (or reinstalling) the Fraunhofer Pro codec, and even though that codec doesn't even say ACM MP3, it enabled me to open up the same file in Sound Forge and Winamp that I couldn't before. Wassup with that??!!

And BTW, with regard to purchasing the Fraunhofer codec, has anyone ever TRIED to purchase that thing? I spent I don't know how long on the Fraunhofer site, clicking on every flippin link I could find trying to get to the purchase page. Good luck!
