  1. New Line Re-Releasing First Two Lord of the Rings Movies
Source: Variety Friday, August 22, 2003

New Line Cinema will re-release The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, with additional scenes and footage added, just two weeks before the worldwide December 17 release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

The plan calls for putting the films on 100-150 screens in the top 10 U.S. markets. Many other U.S. cities will have one cinema participating in the special extended edition screenings. Running times for the extended editions are 208 minutes for "Fellowship of the Ring" and 214 minutes for "The Two Towers."

Advanced ticket sales are scheduled to begin in late September or early October on exhibitor Web sites and movie ticketing sites like Fandango, MovieFone and Movietickets.com.

Starting the week of Dec. 5, the extended DVD cut of "Fellowship of the Ring" will be released in some 100 or so theaters in the U.S. and in 20 theaters in Canada.

Then, the week of Dec. 12, "The Two Towers" will be released, leading up to a worldwide Dec. 16 daylong marathon, during which all three films will be shown back-to-back. The screenings that day will include a 3 p.m. showing of "Fellowship" followed by a 7 p.m. screening of "Two Towers" and then an 11 p.m. screening of "Return of the King," which will carry over into Dec. 17 -- the day of its global release.

Do you know if the additional scenes will be in addition to the ones added to the special edition DVD(s)?

theres only one extended edition, and it seems stupid (but likely) they'll add even more scenes for this re-release. to put on DVD as some super-ultra 12-disc collectors edition later next year.

By the sounds of it. But if there will be even more scenes than the extended DVD release is unknown. I guess they figure if someone will watch 6+ hours for the first two why not 7+. It'll be interesting to see them pull it off with a total of 10+ hours... thats a long day! I wonder how many theaters will actually do this?

    ouch. 208 + 214 + 211* (??) = 633 minutes = 10.5 hours = one big assbuster.

now, let's all try to get that on one DVDR (for starters. then one 8cm DVDR for the gamecube. then one VCD. then one 8cm VCD..... suitable for playing down a "Three" cellphone)

definately not a catch-it-after-work movie showing.

    * dunno how long extended ROTK would be - just took the average.

The extended DVD version for Fellowship was 208 mins, the same as this new theatrical release. So as least as far as this one is concerned, its just the theatrical release of the extended version, not new footage in addition to the extended version.

There is no official extended DVD version for Two Towers announced yet, as far as I know, but I'm sure its coming and my guess is that it will be exactly 214 mins.

Well, even if FOTR is going to be the same as the extended edition DVD, we'll probably go see it, if my mom is available to watch the baby.... all day.

I don't usually see a movie more than once, but LOTR was good enough to make me go back three times for the first one. I would have watched Two Towers again, but it was out of the theaters by the time I had the opportunity to do so.

I'm anxiously waiting for Return of the King.

  16. I saw the first one, but not the second. I may go just to see the second one on a big screen, not both. I know the DVD comes out tomorrow, but some movies you just have to see in a theater.

I probably will se Return of the King about 2 weeks after release. I don't like crowed theaters.

it's probably good that I'm going to be on a boat in the middle of the Atlantic when this goes down, as my wife is a nut for Tolkien...

but I am getting her the 4-disc set of Two Towers for her birthday in November, so I'lll have a couple of weeks of not being able to watch any dvd's, while she goes through every scrap of stuff on the discs...

it's nuts, I tell ya! Nuts!!
