Ok .. i am VERY VERY sceptical about that link and it's firmware update http://superdrive.cynikal.net/

I have no real way of checking out if this is good or bad .. but if it is GOOD ... which i hope, I think it can be very nice if it really makes the drive more receptive to all kinds of cheapo DVDRs .. my main problem these days .. I am not really after higher speed or DVD RW ... but if apple made that drive more picky that it should be .. i sure would love to fix that

again, a warning, flashing hardware can cause damage, i have not tried that, i myself am sacred .. thus I am here trying to find out more

  2. I took a deep breath and ran it - with no problems!
Now I can burn to DVD-RW. That alone was worth the price of admission.
I don't have any 4X DVDs yet to verify that it will burn at 2x. Toast tells me it's burning to a memorex 2x at 2x but the seconds tick by at half speed, so I know it's still 1x. I did record a cd at 16x, though.

Lots of praise here gave me the courage to try it:

  3. Works a treat on my PG 15" 1GHz

Have burned at true (ie: timed) 16x CD-R & 2xDVD-R

    Haven't tried DVD-RW

great to hear .. my biggest question is if it will fix problems I have with cheaper DVDRs (the UJ 815 seems VERY picky) ... speed is not my main issue ... though .. 16x would be nice

  5. What's a specific blank DVD-R that you can confirm will burn at 2X?
