  1. Can someone confirm that the pana e80 can do the hi speed transfer of video from its hard disk to dvd-r media? If so, what speed can it write or transfer? I know the faster a media can handle now is 4x, but I have read somewhere that it can do upto 16x. Is that right?

    Thanks guys...

I have yet to see the option for "hi-speed" dubbing; I have been transferring old vhs tapes to dvd-r and have not been able to choose this option. according to the manual on the 80, it should be one of the options in recording speed.

  3. High speed dubbing can be done. I have done it.
As for actual speed rate... I am not sure. (one hour video could be done in about 5-10 minutes)

Certain conditions need to be present for this. (read the manual... I know its manual sucks)

If you do ANY kind of editing on the hard disc, high speed transfer will not be available.

  4. To turn on "high speed" DVD-R dubbing, enable "DVD-R Compatible Mode" first.

On: High speed mode compatibility (“>>O” appears in the
    dubbing list. page 28 )
    –Pictures are saved at 4:3.
–For SAP broadcasts use “Select MTS”. (next page)
Select the type of audio in advance.
–Hybrid VBR Resolution (below) setting is “Fixed”.

    Off:
You cannot dub programs to a DVD-R disc using the high speed
mode if you recorded the program on a DVD recorder that does
not have the “DVD-R compatible Rec” function, even when dubbing
to the HDD with this setting “On”.

The drive is rated as 1X as a fully utilized dvd-r requires one hour to write. The time requires to write the disc is proportional to the amount of data but not directly related to the length of the video. One hour of video recorded in XP will require one hour to write but one hour of video recorded in SP will require approx. half the time to write.

This is most certainly not true. I have divided and shortened programs and the resulting programs can be high speed dubbed.

I bet not, there is no 16x media, I can't even find 8x media. Even then it would be +r & the panasonic is -r

    Here http://www.panasonic.com/consumer_electronics/dvd_recorder/dvd_recorder.asp

    High-Speed Recording

Record from the hard disk to a DVD-RAM disc at up to 12x speed. A one-hour program can be transferred in EP mode from hard disk to DVD-RAM disc in five minutes.

This speed is not based on media speed but dubbing real-time video speed
Surely that's not correct? Surely it's based on the data rate? DVD-R x1 has a data transfer rate of 11MBits/S therefore 2x DVD-R has a transfer to 22MBits/S and so on. This is how it works with regard to PC drives or are you saying Panasonic use a different measuring system?

    Yes. It seems that way.

    1x = 60min in 60min; 12x = 60min in 5min

Isn't that only for DVD-RAM though when doing a 'high speed' data transfer (which is like copying a file to a HDD)? Whereas DVD-R uses standard measuring?

  15. I guess the whole idea is that manufacturers lean towards numbers that simple users understand and not what people that understans computers know. Good example is 4.7GB DVD where they use multiplication by "simple people" 1000 and not "computer people" 1024. Same for "high-speed". If I have 1hour of video, how long it will take ? Nobody cares about bitrate, bites, bytes or any of that computer stuff.

  16. Hi kc33

My mistake when I said any editing I meant making playlists. If you make playlists, you cannot use the high-speed dub.

Thanks for the clarification. I only have the e80 for about two weeks and I am still not sure what the playlist can be used for.

  18. That's what it is, a Playing List. A list of things that play in order, automatically.
