  1. I am a new beginner to dv authoring. I read that dedicating a separate hard drive is important for dv editing. Can anyone recommend how many GB is good for the second drive. I will just be editing dv from my camcorder and then burning to a dvd.

  3. Definitely 120GB, at least. Prices are around $1 a Gig or less, so buy big so you don't have to worry about filling it up.

  4. Yeah, I'd say 120GB is a good place to start, although depending on the codecs being used and the level of initial compression, you might be able to get away with 80GB.

I, personally am using a striped raid with 2 - 120GB drives, giving me a total of 240GB.

120Gb is a good size for DV. Suggest 7200rpm. Video from a DV camcorder is 13.5Gb per hour. By the time you make edit copys and temp files you can fill a disk very quickly. Beware of drives over 120Gb, many even recent motherboards bios cannot take them.

if you're running xp or win 2k...right click my computer and choose manage. then click on disk management. an initialization box should pop up if the drive is detected. then just right click on the drive on the right and choose format. format in ntfs so you don't have the 4gb file size restiction.

Go to the manufactures web site as most have a little ultility to do just this. Also you will need to enable the drive in the bios
