  1. Please dont say TmpEnc, or i'll loose it. I tried TmpEnc with practically all the SVCDs files i created and i never works. I always have audio sync problems after the merge point and some times even before it. And i tried using Virtual dub to join the avi files before encoding, but mismatched audio sample rates put an end to that dream.

I need something that works. :P

It seems that there is no real good program for joining mpeg2's. Assuming that your video formats are compatible, you can make the audio formats the same and join the AVI's with Vdub. What I have done is strip out the audio into wav format and then reload that back into the AVI. I'm not sure how much you need, step by step it goes like this:

Save the audio out first: audio>full processing mode, audio>compression>no compression, audio>conversion>44.1(VCD) or 48(DVD) Hz., then file>save wav.
Now you can load the wav audio back into the AVI:audio>wav audio and select the newly created wav file.
Now save the AVI: Audio>direct stream copy, video>direct stream copy, then file>save AVI.

After doing that you should be able to join the AVI's!

All the mpeg merging tools I've used in the past do an excellent job of stitching (not true merging) multiple mpegs into one. However, if you plan on doing anything with the stitched mpeg other than viewing it on your pc, you're screwed. You can't mux, reencode, dvd author them because it will only do the first part of a stitched mpeg instead of the whole file. Now I know you don't want to hear this, but TMPEGEnc does do a true merge. I did run across the same problem you are having with video/audio going out of sync on any part other than the first. What I found out is if the mpeg file is encoded at a true ntsc 29.97 fps or 25 fps pal, your mpeg files will merge correctly keeping all parts in sync--it does not matter if they were encoded in cbr/vbr/cq. However, if the mpeg is encoded at 23 fps with a pulldown for ntsc 29.97 fps playback, the mpegs will not merge/sync correctly. I don't know why this is so. I had many SVCD's that I put on DVD and after many trial and errors, the 23 fps encoded mpeg was the culprit. What I do now is I load the mpeg into TMPEGEnc as if I'm going to reecode it. If it says its a film video, I'll know it was encoded at 23 fps, therefore, merging will not happen. At this point, I'll either reencode each part to 352x480 29.97 fps, audio 224 48K then merge for DVD burn or load into Virtualdub then recompress with Divx5 with a bitrate of 10K or one pass quality base to keep the quality as close to the original mpeg, then merge both resulting avi's with Virtualdub, reencode with TMPEGEnc.

I know it's not what you wanted to hear but hope some of this helps in some way.

  4. I encode svcd's with cce and multiplex with bbmpeg then use tmpgenc to merge. works flawless

for mpeg1, use m2 edit pro... does it perfectly without sound problems.

P.S. Btw when i encode segments with tmpgenc then merge them with the same program, I get audio sync... could never figure out why either.

Thank you! Since I am very new to all of this, I used a guide from the start that seemed to be correct. Unfortunately, one of the first things recommended in that guide was to use the NTSC Film setting in TMPGEnc. As a result, even though I did everything in TMPGEnc, nothing really came out right. I will go back and try it with the regular 29.97 NTSC non-FILM setting, and see if that helps. I'll report back. Thanks again.
