After going through sefty's guide on how to use DVDx to convert DVD to avi format, I made an attempt. I did managed to convert my DVD to avi, but find out that the image is either choppy or wavy.

I am using DivX 5.04 codec and I have a P IV 1.6 Geforce 2 MX video card. Is such problem due to the codec or my comp specs? How to convert the DVD into Avi with its picture the same quality as seen in the DvD??

  2. Blackprince, I'm no expert with DVDr (DVD to DiVX) but I think it's a pretty cool and powerful program, although not that easy to get used to using. I'd say try to read all you can, then that might not be enough. The program will do it, it's just getting it setup properly for your movie <and>.

I usually try several short rips to test my settings. After i'm satified then I'll think about going the long haul, not before. You can tell alot about a 1 minute rip.

Getting your aspect ration setup properly is pretty vital. If you're going to VCD or SVCD for settop play then you need to know and understand the 'standards' and follow them. That will take a lot of the mistery out of the program.

If you're output is bad with DivX that surprises me. I've seen some near original quality files with only 900 max bitrate. Pretty impressive.

I don't let the computer do anything but encode (no matter what the codec). I streamline my startup and running applications and hardware the best I can. If you were to note your CPU usage during one of those routines you'd understand. If the computer drops the encode for something more important you will probably wind up with a bad file.

I double check all my encoding setting then check them again. Write stuff down and keep a record. It's not so much learning what to do, it's learning what not to do.

Good luck and try it again.
