  1. Hello there,

    Nice place you have here.
I wonder if any of you could help me out here, I´m an absolute beginner in the TV to PC capture thingie eager to learn all I can so I can make this work:

    This is me:

    Asus P4P800-EAY
    Intel P4 2200 MHz
    NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE
    130 GB + 20 GB disk space
    1 GB RAM

I´ve read all the tutorials on the green sidebar on how to capture from the TV/VCR employing Virtualdub (though I´d prefer using the PowerDirector Pro that came with my machine since it alledgedly can "capture just about anything under the sun" and I´m already learning the ropes with it, doing some very primitive editing and whatnot).
So, here´s my main problem. I made the following connection between my Geforce card and the VCR:

Now I KNOW I´m doing this wrong (if not for the fact that I simply am getting NO signal in my VirtualDub/PowerDirector Pro capture window), but before you start my crucification ritual, perhaps a small pointing in the right direction would be just about enough to get me out of your hair .

From "N00b, to get a signal you have to use the XYZ cable and attach it to the whatchumacallit instead of connecting it to the doomsdaydevice P2000" to " Child, that video card and video capture is the ultimate water/grease scenario!", ANY constructive input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for reading this.

  2. I would like to point out that hookup to your card is Video only. You will have to get a Composite audio to mini audio adapter or cord and plug it into the line IN on your soundcard. You want to use Composite In only (unless you choose to use S-Video instead). Composite Out is for display only rather than record.

  3. Thank you, Piccoro, I wasn´t sure about this connection myself and this thread was mainly to fill in the blanks;

so, to get a sound signal from the VCR I will have to connect the composite audio plug to my Mobo´s line IN (soundcard is a part of the mobo), right?

And from what I figured, Comp Out is mainly for displaying in the VCR whatever my PC transmits.
For capturing from the VCR I will have to have a S-VIdeo IN adapter.
    Right?

Gawd, I´m so in the dark here half of what I said was invented as I typed...
"They say that if you play the Windows CD backward you can hear satanic speech; well, that´s nothing.
When you play it forward, it installs windows."

  4. For recording, Sound has to go in the sound Line In, yes.
RCA composite is fine, which goes in Video Composite In.
    OR
    Use S-Video, its your choice.

    S-Video will loose less quality.

Umm, S-video is only video, he still need's to connect the rca audio cables (Red and white)

  6. Thank you for the repplies, folks, I really appreciate any help I can get on this.

Is there any tutorial about cable connections you can point me out?

I just need the basic "this XYZ cable goes here, that one goes there" .

  7. What would you need is to get 2 cables for Audio.
    1) The first one is usually called stereo "Y" adapter cable. On one end there is "Male 3.5-mm stereo plug" (the one all the headphones have), on the other end two "Male RCA" plugs (ones you already have).
    2) "RCA connector". On two sides it should be the wholes for RCA connector (the wholes are excectly like ones for VIDEO IN and VIDEO OUT on your video card adapter).
You connect cable from Scart to one side of 2) "RCA connector", 1)2 cables of "Y" adapter cable to another side of 2). Connect the smallest plug of 1) Y adapter to Line In of your Computer sound card.
