I've heard these are made by CMC, which some people say are pretty bad, though I haven't had a problem with the (very) few I've tried. So you might want to steer clear.

I think you can get CompUSA's own brand for about the same price. I got one of their 50 pack spindles recently and they were Optodiscs. Some of the 10-packs are Princo though so beware.

Personally I wouldn't consider anything more than "free" a good price for anything from Memorex. I've had problems with their DVDs and their CDs.

I have bought about 200 of the CompUSA brand discs since they burn at 2x on my Sony DRU500ax. The last 50 I got for $0.70 each when they had a 30% off one day only special.

  7. DON'T BUY MEMOREX DVD-R'S!!!

I bought 2 50pks for what I thought was a deal ($30 per 50/pk), and I have experienced 85-90% failure rate (out of 20 burns). They would burn fine at 1x, but the playback on ANY of my DVD players (Pioneer DV-C503, Denon 1805, Apex 1100w, Norcent DP-300) is jittery and skips starting about halfway through the disk. Very annoying.

I have successfully used TDK, Fuji, Ritek, Maxell, Optodisc, etc. with NO PROBLEMS.

I contacted Memorex's Replacement department and they gave me an address to ship the disks to and they said they would replace them. What good will this do if the new ones are made the same? None, but worth a try. Unfortunately, I bought the disks online from a place that only offered 14 day return policy.

Just a fair warning to others looking to buy Memorex DVD-R's. I'll retract my warning if the new disks I receive work ok.

  8. I know from a user forum for panasonic dmr-hs2 units that a lot of people say to stay away from memorex. They have had a lot of probnlems. I have two a relative gave me and have not tried them yet.

  9. I had no reason to badmouth Memorex until about two weeks ago. I have been using Memorex CD media for years and may have made five coasters out of at least 3,000 discs.

Their DVD-R/+R media, however, is horrible. The failure rate is about 80% with my burner, which can spit out TDK and Sony discs all day long with no problem. And, the discs that do burn do not work well in any of my DVD players, including my Apex AD-1100, and that says something.

defense once said that Verbatim's new slogan was, 'If it comes out round, it's a keeper!" This honor should go to Memorex instead.

I always use Memorex CD-R's, only bad burns I have had were due to user error...its odd, I've heard NOTHING but bad things about their DVD-R media, mixed reactions on + although more positive feedback on those lately. I wonder how a company can make such high quality CD-R media but when it comes to DVD-R, be about equal to a bad batch of Princo's. All I know is I'm glad I read warnings on their DVD media on this site and just picked up TDK's once they were on sale. Smartest move I've made in a long time...tested them in 5 DVD players, 3 PS2's, all worked flawlessly.

I have burned about 15 Memorex DVD-R, about 5 of those being 4X, and a couple of +RWs, and no problems with any of them. While this is far from a ringing endorsement or a comprehensive test, I would say for use in *my* burner and *my* DVD players, these DVDs are just fine *for me*.
It appears that there are some media with which many people have problems, and other media with which hardly anybody has problems. It appears to depend upon each individual setup.
If you find one of the brands that everybody says is great, I wouldn't think twice about it, just buy it. If it's one that everybody says is crap, but you have no personal experience with it, I would say that if you can find these on sale, buy a *SMALL QUANTITY* and see how they work. If they work for you, make a decision. If not, avoid them.
