can you do it or do you have to set the drive the master

Yeah, you can do it with the drive set to slave. At least Ive never had a problem doing it to my DW-U10a, and Ive flashed it twice.

depending on the source of the firmware (hacked or from manufacturer) you may have to specify switches indicating the drive.
usually manufacturers make updating a bit more user friendly in this respect and you just run the app, just make sure you always check out the Readme file included in the zip file or from the manufacturer / firmware writers website! -
You put the source disk in the drive to be updated.
How CAN you flash another drive. Your drive will read it and respond to it, only.
